Abstract

Heroism is a noble deed full of courage and bravery to protect the weak and the oppressed. The heroes have been known throughout the centuries, through the history records, artworks and literary works. Heroes have been described as having perfect physical appearance and strength. However, there are also depictions that a hero has a dilemma when he has the half-blood descendant of both the people he fights for and the enemy he fights to. In this research, the writer analyzes the half-blood hero in Y. B. Mangunwijaya’s novel, IkanIkanHiu, Ido, Homa and compares it to James Cameron’s movie, Avatar. The writer uses Structuralism and Semiotics approaches to find the heroic symbols and signs, compare them and find the particular structure. The result can be found that the half-blood heroes both in the novel and movie have the prominent physical appearance of superiority and strength compared to others. They also deal with the dilemma in status and position in the society as the half-blood or mixed-blood heroes, and they hold the heroic principles such as bravery and the ideal of protecting the weak and fight for the oppressed.

Abstract

There is a parallel relationship research between vampire literature and Marx’s works on the theory of social class and struggle as what so called as Marx’s Vampire. The obvious connection of the fictitious characters of vampires who suck blood of the victims lies on the analogy of the capitalists as the superior beings suck the workforce of the working class labours. Through the three novels, one title is in the form of trilogy, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, George R. R. Martin’s Fevre Dream, and Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s The Strain Trilogy, the writer found out that the vampires in the novels are portrayed as masters who literally suck the blood from the victims, the slaves, or those who have the characteristics of being ones. The master and slave relationship describes the theory of Marx’s Vampire.

Abstract

Thérèse Raquin is a classic novel which is considered for years to have a dark yet natural story. The emotion and characterization are somewhat real. Therefore, the depiction of the characters and their lives is also real and natural. The bad and dark side of human’s life in this novel was controversial in the author’s time, Émile Zola. Thus, the writer finds out the necrophilic desires as one of the kind of sexual disorders seen in one of the main character’s characterization, Laurent Le Claire. The writer used psychoanalysis theory in digging necrophilic desires in the unconscious of Laurent through his acts and characterization. The writer also described Laurent’s past and his relationship to his father in order to prove his necrophilic desire.
