Abstract

Going through the journey together, what makes the travel writing of Samuel Johnson differs with the biography of himself written by his travel-mate, James Boswell? One engrossing narrative; The Scarlet Letter has different voice of writing with another brilliant short story The Fall of the House of Usher despite the fact that they were written by two American writers around the same period (Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe). Each writing has different style from one person to another in a way that various perception is carved into distinct types of understandable language. In an early case, typical sense of language production and personal writing style do become crucial factors in constructing enriched and structured forms of literary works on any genre.Writing as a productive skill and an ideological exploration play a critical role for authors to express their language ability. Field of study to analyze language creation in literary works is called stylistics. Some texts in literary works can somehow affect reader’s thought or emotional feeling. This connection is related to the distance between the speaker and the reader, focusing on how a speaker transfers his language and in what way the reader grasps the textual meaning. Analyzing this special connection over time and space elements in stylistics is called deixis or deictic shift. Along with the idea, this essay will explore the deictic shift in Slaughterhouse Five or The Children’s Crusade.

Abstract

Since its first performance in 1605, Eastward Ho had heightened public interest by giving audience a taste of entertaining, satirical play set around the life of Touchstone, a hard-working and honest goldsmith. The play depicts the conflict between contrasting figures: Touchstone’s daughters – the ambitious Gertrude and the obedient Mildred – and his apprentices – the prodigal Quicksilver and the faithful Golding. These strong characters have driven intriguing plots into an ending where each side receives what he or shedeserves. This story describes the characters of urban masculinity as well as female attitudes towards social status, class, and property. A moralistic view is developed in a conventional, yet entertaining way, where the line between virtue and vice can be distinctly discerned. This is one of the characteristics of the period and predominantly reflects the authors’ viewpoints. Created by three prominent playwrights; Ben Jonson, John Marston and George Chapman as a collaborative task, some portions of Eastward Ho are alluded to in well known titles, places, characters, proverbs and lines, of previous works near the period. This essay therefore tries to explore the social changes of the play by its various forms of allusions.

Abstract

Having to interact with crime fiction which presumably is considered as ephemeral literature, cannot be an excuse to dissolve the theme of justice inside the plots. Agatha Christie as the Mistress of Complication and Mystery, has written series of murder and mystery fiction since the beginning of twentieth century. And Then There Were None or entitled Ten Little Niggers, one of her masterpieces depicts Christie’s unique disposition of turning perception from ‘detective as criminal solver’ into ‘murderer as justice protector’. This paper seeks to analyze how justice is portrayed and challenged by looking at the characters created by Christie as well as making a more thorough analysis of the symbols and dialogues. The result of this paper portrays that the idea of justice, just like human beings, can be flawed or misinterpreted even by the so- called a man in the court.

Abstract

Metacognition has long touched upon critical issues related to educational psychology and gained advancing recognition in language learning. However, empirical research on its effect on academic writing remains limited. This study investigated metacognitive awareness among 167 Indonesian university students enrolled in an academic writing class, focusing on two self-assessment patterns: superficial (overestimating abilities) and hypercritical (underestimating abilities). Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, the researchers first compared students' actual writing exam scores with their self-assessments, which mirrored the lecturer’s grading rubric. Students were grouped into quartiles based on performance, and a Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was conducted to examine differences between their actual and perceived scores. Results revealed distinct patterns. Among lower-performing students (bottom quartile), only 11 out of 53 students (approximately 21%) exhibited superficial self-assessment. In contrast, among higher-performing students (top quartile), 61 out of 63 students (97%) demonstrated hypercritical self-assessment. These results suggest that while only a minority of low-performing students were superficial, the majority of high-performing students tended to be hypercritical about their writing abilities. Follow-up interviews with four selected students further explored the reasons behind these patterns. Qualitative analysis identified three main contributing factors: person and task variables, response to feedback, and self-regulation strategies. The findings underscore the importance of fostering metacognitive awareness and accurate self-assessment in foreign language writing instruction to promote effective learning and self-regulated development.
