Abstract

This study aims to discover critical discourse analysis in the text of speeches by Nadiem Makarim and Muhadjir Effendy. The speeches of these two figures were chosen because the text is a kind of Critical Discourse Analysis object (CDA). The Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method examines the relationship between language, ideology, and power. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. The researcher uses Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional framework (CDA) to analyze Critical Discourse Analysis data. The researchers used qualitative data analysis theory from Miles and Huberman (1994) to present and analyze the data, which included data reduction, data display or representation, and conclusion drawing or verification. The result of this study shows that both the script of speeches from Nadiem Makarim and Muhadjir Effendy have micro, mezzo, and macro-level related to the framework of Norman Fairclough. The language used in both speeches is the standard language. Still, the speech of Nadiem Makarim used more natural and creative language that can touch the millennial generations. In contrast, in the speech of Muhadjir, familiar words can confuse the audience.

Abstract

Indonesia has already used the communicative language teaching (CLT) approach for more than two decades, and research from that time reveals its challenges. This paper aims to synthesize past research to address challenges and constraints in CLT implementation and then suggest ways to tackle the mentioned challenges and constraints. The comprehensive framework from Fadilah (2018) was used to identify four broad categories of challenges. This helped us classify challenges by source and then to solve them. The finding of this study by analyzing Indonesian CLT implantation research is that the challenges of CLT can be divided into four frameworks: a) societal classroom constraints include teacher beliefs, teacher beliefs vs students’ preferences, and teachers' workload; b) socioeconomic constraints include class size, grammar-based syllabus, the low of students’ participation, unequal educational recourses c) cultural constraints include, local norms, students anxiety, and embarrassment; d) ideological constraints include English as a foreign language. Further, this paper concludes that these challenges are interconnected and require a systematic approach, with government intervention as a potential first step. This paper offers research-based practical and theoretical recommendations to develop the CLT practice in a specific context.

Abstract

In the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown, students have faced heightened learning loss, attributed to factors such as inadequate learning methods, restricted access to education, decreased instructional time, and emotional stressors. Particularly affected is English language learning, prompting the need for effective remedies. This study proposes the implementation of new Self-Organized Learning Environments (SOLEs) as a strategic response to mitigate learning setbacks, especially in post-pandemic contexts. Employing a systematic review of relevant literature and employing established methodologies for position paper composition, this research undertakes a comprehensive analysis of SOLEs' effectiveness in nurturing students who experienced learning loss. Divided into three focal areas, the study explores the evolving new role of teachers within SOLEs, the integration of SOLEs in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogy, and the utilization of digital applications to enhance language-focused SOLE practices. Through this multifaceted analysis, the study aims to offer innovative insights and actionable recommendations for addressing learning loss and fostering resilient educational strategies in the aftermath of the pandemic.The results of this study contribute valuable knowledge to the ongoing discourse on educational recovery, with implications for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders invested in creating adaptive and effective learning environments.
