Abstract

Background: The representation of female ex-convicts, particularly in Indonesia, remains biased despite the increasing number of ex-convict narratives. This study focuses on addressing this gap by examining the TV series “Dapur Napi” on Vidio, exploring how the series illustrates power disparities in the reintegration of female ex-convicts into society and how the series uses hyperbolic dramatization of female ex-convicts for entertainment purposes. Purpose: This research aims to critically analyze how societal power discrepancies are represented in the media and how media constructs the identity and reality of female ex-convicts in “Dapur Napi” through the lens of standpoint theory. Methods: Employing Critical Discourse Analysis by Norman Fairclough, this research dissects the textual, discursive practice, and sociocultural practice dimensions of the TV series using a qualitative approach. Results: The study’s results reveal the portrayal of female ex-convicts, emphasizing complexities in identity construction, societal rejection, and the dual role of media in both entertainment and norm reinforcement. Implications: This research can further develop the discussion on Standpoint Theory, particularly providing insights into inequalities in the representation of marginalized female ex-convicts in popular media. Practically, this research can advocate for more accurate and diverse portrayals, and promote media literacy to challenge stereotypes and promote social inclusion.

Abstract

The high level of air pollution in Jakarta had become a hot topic on various social media platforms in the second half of 2023. This research aims to find out whether and to what extent the level of exposure to social media influences the level of public health risk perception, especially regarding the problem of air pollution in Jakarta. The research was conducted only to Instagram, which is one of the most popular social media platforms in Indonesia. By using the concept of The Social Amplification of Risk Framework (SARF) to understand the role of media in shaping people's risk perceptions, this research uses quantitative approach with survey method on 109 respondents. The results of hypothesis testing show that exposure to information on Instagram related to Jakarta air pollution influences perception of health risk even though it is not the dominant factor. The results of this research show the need to utilize various communication channels to achieve more optimal results in risk communication. The use of omnichannel needs to be supported by an integrated communication strategy to provide message consistency and continuity so that people are able to understand risks correctly and adopt the right behavior to deal with them.

Abstract

This study examines the populist rhetoric of political actor, Muhaimin Iskandar, delivered on @CakIminNow during the 2024 Indonesian presidential election campaign, especially in the tweet dated October 1, 2023 regarding the Celebration of Pancasila Sanctity Day. This study uses a critical paradigm and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis technique in analyzing nine units of analysis posted on @CakIminNow. The results of this study have revealed that the representation of moderate Islam has been utilized as a tool of populist rhetoric by Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin) as one of the vice presidential candidates in the 2024 election. In addition, moderate Islam is not only seen as a system of beliefs and religious practices but also as a commodity in political marketing communication efforts by political actors. In short, this populist rhetoric functions as a strategy to strengthen the political image and garner voter support during Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election campaign.
