Abstract

This research aims to analyze strategies for economic empowerment and environmental preservation through the use of organic waste by a pastor in a church environment. This case study focuses on Ibu Ismawati, a widowed priestess with two children, one of whom is studying at college and the other is in high school. Mrs. Ismawati uses her pig manure to produce compost, which is used in small-scale farming on the land behind her house. This agriculture includes corn, chilies, beans, and rice. This research uses a qualitative approach with observation and in-depth interviews to collect data. The research results show that the conversion of organic waste into compost not only helps meet the daily needs of Mrs. Ismawati's family but also supports environmental preservation through waste reduction and increased soil fertility. Additionally, this activity provides a concrete example of how church communities can implement sustainable agricultural practices to improve the economic welfare of their members.

This discipleship activity is carried out by intern students from the Theology Study Program every night of the week with material that includes an introduction to Jesus, His humanity and divinity, divine character, the work of Jesus Christ, death and His ascension. The research method used is a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and participant observation. The research results show that this discipleship program has succeeded in increasing theological understanding, deepening personal relationships with Jesus, and strengthening faith commitment among youth and teenagers. Apart from that, this activity also encourages active participation in church activities and community service.

Abstract

The sulang-sulang hariapan tradition is a significant cultural heritage of the Batak Toba community that embodies values of love, respect for elders, family reconciliation, equitable inheritance distribution, and leadership regeneration. The ritual is traditionally performed by offering food to parents who have reached the status of saur matua, symbolizing gratitude and respect. It is also accompanied by requests for blessings, advice, and public acknowledgment of mistakes, thus fostering peace, forgiveness, and social harmony within the community. However, in contemporary practice, the meaning of this tradition has gradually shifted toward a more formalized ceremony that emphasizes social status rather than its original spiritual and communal values. This study employs descriptive qualitative methods, combining field research with theological reflection, to examine how the values inherent in sulang-sulang hariapan can be understood in the light of the Gospel. The findings indicate that the tradition has profound potential to serve as a contextual medium for Christian faith expression. Therefore, it is crucial to revitalize its theological meaning so that the tradition remains relevant and transformative in strengthening family bonds and nurturing leadership in the modern era.
