Abstract

This research aims to determine the representation of nationalism in Mahmud Darwisy's poetry. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The data in this research are from three poems by Mahmud Darwisy, entitled his poems 'Āsyiq Min Falisṭīn, Aḥinnu Ila Khubzi Ummī, and Yaumiyyāt Jarḥ Falisṭīnī (Ilā Fadwā Ṭuqān), then analyzed descriptively using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach to reveal the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth . The results of the research show that Mahmud Darwisy clearly represents his nationalism by expressing many symbols of love for the homeland and resistance to colonialism with his poetry. Mahmud Darwisy used his poetry as a weapon against the Zionist invaders, and ignited the spirit of patriotism and resistance against colonialism for the sake of freedom, independence and a better life for the Palestinian people. In these three poems. The poet wants to convey strong feelings of longing and deep love for someone he loves. These three poems are like a message from Mahmud Darwisy to continue to build readers' sense of patriotism, especially the Palestinian people and the Arab people, so that they can have a high fighting spirit and build strong unity to defend independence. The poet wants to convey that when someone is far from someone they love, the desire to return and fight for their good will become greater.
