Abstract

This research analyzes the representation of hunter characters, namely Kit and Tom, in Patricia Hill's short story "Kit Carson." Transitivity analysis from M.A.K. Halliday's (2004) within perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) was employed with a qualitative descriptive approach. The results indicate that Material Processes are the most prominent (45.15%), portraying the hunters through physical actions that highlight their bravery, strength, resilience, and initiative. Verbal Processes rank second (30.97%), underscoring the importance of communication in their planning and interactions. Furthermore, Mental Processes (12.39%) and Relational Processes (9.73%) also contribute to depicting their inner thoughts, feelings, and identities. Kit emerges as a highly active leader (frequently acting as Actor and Sayer), supported by Tom, who is also communicative and collaborative. In essence, the hunters in this story are rich and diverse characters: not only physically tough, but also dynamic, astute in communication, judicious in action, responsible, and principled. Kit embodies bravery and dominance, while Tom demonstrates calmness and loyalty.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to identify the types of conceptual metaphors that appear in grief narratives on the Medium.com platform and to explain how these metaphors represent the grief experiences of the authors.Methodology: This qualitative study deploys content analysis. The data consist of all sentences containing metaphorical expressions about grief collected through documentation. Ten narratives on the theme of grief published on the Medium.com platform were selected as the source of data. The data were analysed using Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) by the Pragglejaz Group (2007). Results: The results show two types of metaphor in stories i.e., ontological metaphors, which are more dominant, and structural metaphors. Moreover, the metaphor embraces various representations such as grief as a burden, ocean, physical strength, wild animal, or self-disintegration. Structural metaphors also appear, especially those that describe grief as physical pain and an expression of love. Overall, metaphors function as cognitive tools that help writers organize, understand, and express complex experiences of grief that are difficult to describe literally. Applications/Originality/Value: This study contributes to the development of metaphor studies in emotional discourse. Further research is recommended to expand the data corpus, compare across cultures or languages, and explore the use of metaphors in the context of grief therapy.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to classify, identify, and analyse the various forms of code-switching that are present in Ika Natassa's Divortiare. The study focuses on how the novel's narrative style, emotional expression, and characterization are influenced by the alternation between Indonesian and English. Methodology: A qualitative text analysis design is used in this study. The novel's bilingual Indonesian and English utterances make up the primary data. Documentation technique, such as repeated reading, underlining, and methodical classification of instances of code-switching, were used to collect data. The analysis adheres to the qualitative methods of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing described by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). The primary analytical tools used were Poplack's (1980) structural framework and Gumperz's (1982) functional model, which were backed by pertinent sociolinguistic and bilingualism theories. Results: According to the results, Divortiare demonstrates three different forms of code-switching: tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. Specifically, the novel's code-switching serves a number of communicative purposes, such as message qualification, interjection, repetition, and personalization. The analysis shows that English insertions function as stylistic devices that reflect contemporary urban Indonesian culture, heighten emotion, and create character identity in addition to acting as linguistic alternations. Applications/Originality/Value: By illustrating how structural types and communicative functions interact to create character voice and narrative meaning, this study advances literary linguistics. The results show how bilingual expression functions as a stylistic tool in modern Indonesian fiction, enhancing affective tone, influencing interpersonal relationships, and portraying bilingual speakers in social contexts.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to classify the types and intentions of expressive speech acts of the main character, Victor Van Dort, in Tim Burton's 2005 Corpse Bride Movie. Methodology: Utilizing a qualitative approach, this text analysis investigates Victor Van Dort's utterances containing expressive speech acts. The data were collected from the movie script using document analysis. The data were analysed deploying the framework of speech act theory by Searle (1979) and contextual pragmatics based on Holmes (2001) to understand the situational and social contexts that influence speech and its meaning.Results: The analysis found 33 expressive speech acts i.e. eight apologizing, seven agreements, five attitudes, five exclamations, three wishes, two thanking, two lamentation, and one greeting. These speech acts mainly describe psychological conditions and emotional reactions. It is important to note the absence of speech acts such as congratulations or condolances, which indicates that the focus of the narrative is on personal emotional experiences rather than social rituals. The meaning of each expressive speech act has also been identified.Applications/Originality/Value: This study highlights the importance of how expressive speech acts contribute to deepening emotions and character development to strengthen the movie's narratives.

Abstract

Rendahnya minat siswa untuk melanjutkan pendidikan ke perguruan tinggi masih menjadi tantangan di SMA Muhammadiyah 5 Karanganyar, yang dipengaruhi oleh lingkungan industri, keterbatasan informasi mengenai pendidikan tinggi, serta persepsi terhadap biaya kuliah. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan minat studi lanjut siswa melalui program Pengenalan Perkuliahan yang dilaksanakan oleh mahasiswa Kuliah Kerja Nyata Pendidikan (KKN-Dik). Kegiatan dilaksanakan menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif yang meliputi sosialisasi, sharing session, diskusi interaktif, serta penyampaian informasi mengenai program studi, jalur masuk perguruan tinggi, dan peluang beasiswa. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui angket untuk mengetahui respons dan perubahan rencana studi siswa setelah mengikuti kegiatan. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa jumlah siswa yang berminat melanjutkan pendidikan ke perguruan tinggi meningkat dari 7 menjadi 14 orang, sedangkan siswa yang memilih langsung bekerja menurun dari 18 menjadi 9 orang. Selain itu, terjadi peningkatan pemahaman siswa mengenai pendidikan tinggi, peluang beasiswa, dan perencanaan karier. Program ini terbukti memberikan dampak positif dalam meningkatkan literasi pendidikan tinggi, motivasi studi lanjut, serta kesiapan siswa dalam merencanakan pendidikan dan karier. Kegiatan serupa berpotensi diterapkan pada sekolah lain dengan karakteristik yang sejenis.
