Abstract

Setabelan Village, located in Banjarsari Sub-district, is one of the four working areas of the Setabelan Health Center. The village experiences a high incidence of Osteoarthritis knee cases in elderly women, with 28 cases per month and 246 cases per year. The main complaint among patients is knee pain. To address this issue, a program was implemented to educate and provide understanding on how to manage knee osteoarthritis, as well as home-based exercise. The program involved counseling sessions on osteoarthritis knee health promotion, using leaflets as a counseling medium. The target participants were the elderly members of Pos Lansia Wijaya Kusuma. The author conducted a pre-test and post-test to evaluate the participants’ level of understanding. The results showed a significant increase in understanding, with the participants’ average questionnaire score increasing from 1.57 in the pre-test to 5.57 in the post-test. Abstract

Setabelan, a neighbourhood in the Banjarsari sub-district, houses a popular healthcare centre called Puskesmas Setabelan. Recent data shows that hypertension is the second most common reason for visits to the centre, with a total of 273 visits and eight patients daily. To address this issue, educational activities were organized to increase awareness and knowledge of physical exercise, particularly brisk walking, and the control of salt consumption among individuals with hypertension. These activities included distributing leaflets, presenting material, demonstrating exercises, and engaging in question and answer sessions with prolanis participants in Taman Banjarsari, Surakarta. The programme led to a significant increase in understanding, as evidenced by the pre-test average score of 2.18 and the post-test average score of 4.48, indicating an improvement of 2.30. The hope is that this community service initiative will empower participants with hypertension to independently manage their blood pressure effectively, ensuring the sustainability of the programme.

Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, degenerative disease that attacks the joints and their tissues, primarily causing progressive damage to the articular cartilage and, subsequently, to the subchondral bone and surrounding synovial structures. Knee osteoarthritis commonly affects elderly patients and is a major cause of disability worldwide. The purpose of this activity is so that the public can find out about exercise programs that can be carried out to reduce complaints in OA sufferers. Counseling is carried out using the lecture method by distributing leaflets, implementing training programs, and asking questions. The data collection method in this research is by using pre-test and post-test. Based on the data obtained, there were quite significant changes in pre-test and post-test scores. The average correct answer on the pre-test questions was 4.9 (49%) increasing to 7.6 (76%) on the post-test questions. Thus, there was an increase in correct answers made by participants by 2.7 points (27%). So it can be concluded that participants in counseling activities experienced an increase in understanding of the osteoarthritis material that was presented.

Abstract

Elderly people are susceptible to health problems, one of which is that their joint movement is reduced compared to when they were young. This occurs because the soft tissue in the joint bearing area decreases, which causes the ability of the bones and joints to weaken in supporting the body. One of the problems that many elderly people encounter is low back pain (LBP). LBP is a muscle (musculoskeletal) disorder which can be characterized by pain in the lumbar or lumbo-sacral area. LBP has the highest prevalence globally in musculoskeletal conditions and is the main cause of disability worldwide. The aim of holding this counseling is to increase knowledge about LBP and practice exercises independently at home so as to reduce complaints. The method for this outreach is by means of lectures and distribution of leaflets, evaluation of this activity uses a questionnaire that is distributed after and after the material delivery activity. The results of the counseling showed an increase in posyandu members' understanding of the material that had been presented. With this increased understanding, it is hoped that posyandu members can implement exercises that can reduce complaints of back pain.
