Abstract

The English language teaching in Indonesia focuses on text or genre, making applying systemic functional linguistics important in writing. However, students struggle with grammar, vocabulary, and constructing words into syntactical construction. They only focus on composing a text, leading to meaningless clauses. The writer has identified the challenge of constructing clause complexes as the research problem. The research aims to identify the types of logico-semantic relations and analyze the logico-semantic relation of clauses frequently used in descriptive texts written by 10th-grade students in middle school. The data was analyzed by classifying the clauses and identifying the logico-semantic relations proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). According to the data analysis, the descriptive text contains logico-semantic relations of clauses such as expansion (elaboration, extension, and enhancement) and projection (idea). Expanding of elaboration and extension in parataxis is most commonly used in the text, accounting for 11% of the total occurrence. However, the text still requires improvement regarding making clause complexes and using conjunctions correctly.
