Abstract

The rise of online gambling in Indonesia has created a new category of socio-economic victims—those facing financial collapse, psychological trauma, and social exclusion. This study explores how zakat distribution can be repositioned to address such digital-era harms by reinterpreting classical asnaf categories, particularly gharimin and fakir-miskin, through the lens of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah. Using a normative-empirical approach, this research integrates doctrinal analysis with stakeholder perceptions gathered through focus group discussions and policy reviews. Findings indicate strong public and scholarly support for more inclusive zakat allocation. While institutional conservatism persists, over 78% of public respondents support zakat for victims of online gambling when linked to rehabilitation and empowerment. This study argues that zakat must evolve from a static legal obligation into a dynamic tool for digital justice—supporting not only economic recovery but also mental resilience and social reintegration. By aligning zakat governance with ethical imperatives and sustainable development goals, zakat institutions can restore their prophetic role in protecting vulnerable communities. The repositioning of zakat is both a theological necessity and a policy innovation in an age where poverty is often entangled with digital exploitation.

Abstract

This study explores the transformative impact of blockchain technology on zakat management, focusing on its implementation by LAZNAS BMH—Indonesia’s pioneering zakat institution to adopt this innovation. Combining quantitative and qualitative methods, the research reveals that blockchain significantly enhances transparency, operational efficiency, and donor trust through immutable records, real-time reporting, and automated distribution via smart contracts. Despite technical challenges and low internal consistency in early survey instruments, findings show a positive perception among donors and beneficiaries, who value traceability, fairness, and speed. Furthermore, qualitative insights emphasize the importance of user education and inclusive design for broader adoption. While a visible gap remains between donations and disbursements, this reflects structured programmatic workflows rather than inefficiency. Ultimately, the study positions blockchain not only as a technical solution, but as a values-driven innovation that redefines trust and accountability in Islamic philanthropy. LAZNAS BMH stands as a compelling model for digital transformation in the nonprofit sector, offering both a technological blueprint and a moral compass for the future of Zakat.

Abstract

Islamic economics has gained significant attention in recent years as a solution to address social inequality and promote sustainable development. Islamic finance, with its principles of social justice, equitable wealth distribution, and responsible management of natural resources, offers a unique approach to economic and social development. This literature review aims to explore the role of Islamic economics in reducing social inequality and the effectiveness of Islamic financial instruments in driving social development. Key instruments in Islamic economics, such as zakat, waqf, and Islamic banking, have proven effective in addressing poverty, promoting financial inclusion, and funding social programs and infrastructure development. This study employs a literature review methodology, gathering and analyzing various relevant sources, such as journal articles, books, and research reports, that discuss the application of Islamic economic principles, particularly zakat, waqf, and Islamic microfinance, in the context of poverty alleviation, welfare equality, and social development. The findings indicate that while Islamic financial instruments have great potential, their implementation still faces challenges related to uncoordinated management, infrastructure limitations, and socio-political barriers. Therefore, a more coordinated, integrated, and community-driven approach that considers local social and cultural contexts is necessary. The study also highlights the importance of increasing public awareness about the benefits of Islamic financial instruments in supporting sustainable social development.

Abstract

This study examines the role of institutional determinants—namely accountability, transparency, and operational efficiency—in shaping zakat payment decisions, with family financial planning serving as a mediating variable. Drawing on an institutional and household financial behavior perspective, the study investigates how the quality of zakat institution governance influences individual decisions to fulfill zakat obligations. The research employs a quantitative approach using survey data collected from 399 respondents, selected through a non-probability sampling technique from a population of 105,644 potential zakat payers. Data were gathered through structured questionnaires and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that accountability, transparency, and operational efficiency have a positive and significant effect on zakat payment decisions. Moreover, family financial planning is found to play a significant mediating role in strengthening the relationship between institutional determinants and zakat payment decisions. These results indicate that effective institutional governance not only directly enhances trust and compliance but also indirectly influences zakat payment behavior by encouraging better household financial planning. This study contributes to the literature on zakat governance and Islamic financial behavior by highlighting the importance of integrating institutional performance with household financial planning mechanisms to improve zakat participation. The findings provide practical implications for zakat institutions in designing governance strategies that foster sustainable zakat compliance.

Abstract

The productive zakat program serves as a strategic instrument in the economic empowerment of mustahik to achieve sustainable welfare and financial independence, as implemented by LAZNAS BMH. This research analyzes empowerment strategies, implementation processes, economic and non-economic impacts, supporting and inhibiting factors of the productive zakat program, as well as its contribution to the paradigm shift in Islamic philanthropy from consumptive to productive. A qualitative approach using a case study method was employed, involving in-depth interviews with managers, mustahik, partners, and community figures, analyzed thematically using NVivo. The results indicate a structured strategy encompassing potential-based selection, provision of business capital/tools, and intensive mentoring that enhances mustahik's skills, business management, and independent mindset. Positive impacts include increased income, family economic stability, reduced dependence on aid, as well as improved self-confidence and motivation. The main supporting factors are mustahik commitment, mentoring, and social support, while inhibitors include business capacity limitations, market access, and mentoring resources. This study fills the literature gap on productive zakat implementation in zakat amil institutions, emphasizes the need for comprehensive regulations to professionalize amil, and recommends a sharia-based empowerment framework for other zakat institutions to address structural poverty.
