Abstract

Empathy, a crucial social skill that can lead to positive results, has gained more attention in recent years. This study aims to systematically examine research on empathy and empathy skills. For this purpose, within the scope of the research, studies on empathy and empathic thinking skills were subjected to bibliometric analysis. Analyzing bibliographic information is one of the most important methods for tracking aspects of scholarly communication, assessing research trends, and determining the priorities of research fields. Since this study focuses on the trends of studies on empathy and empathic thinking skills, the method of the research was determined as bibliometric analysis. The study group of the research consists of between the years 2013-2023 1135 articles accessed from the Web of Science database. According to the first finding of the research, it was seen that studies on empathy were mostly published in 2014. Additionally, most of the studies were published in the journal "Social Cognitive".The third observation is that most research is conducted in the health field. Following it were psychology and education. A fourth conclusion was that the correlation design, one of the quantitative research methods, was preferred. Additionally, It was determined that the sample levels of the studies were primarily adults and university students, and the sample size was between 31-100. It was observed that descriptive analysis, correlation, and ANOVA were mainly used in data analysis of the studies. In light of the findings obtained from the research, it is suggested that empathy-based studies can be carried out with preschool, primary school, and young children, and the number of meta-analysis and meta-synthesis studies can be increased.

Abstract

This study investigates the limited integration of art into life sciences and social studies education in Turkey, despite these subjects being designed to reflect real-life experiences and social contexts. The primary aim is to identify research trends on this topic through descriptive, content-based bibliometric analysis. Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, a total of 318 academic studies, including theses and peer-reviewed articles, were systematically reviewed. Data was analyzed according to publication year, research type, method and design, study group, grade level, sample size, and art branch. Results show that publication activity peaked in 2019, with the majority of studies being master’s theses. Most research focused on 7th-grade students, involved small samples (0–30 or 31–60 participants), and employed qualitative or experimental designs. Drama emerged as the most integrated art form. These findings reveal a growing academic interest in interdisciplinary approaches, while also underscoring the need for broader exploration of underrepresented art branches in life sciences and social studies education. The results highlight a growing scholarly interest in interdisciplinary approaches, while simultaneously revealing significant gaps in the representation of diverse art forms. These findings underscore the need for future research to adopt broader methodological diversity, include larger and more varied participant groups, and expand the scope of artistic integration to enrich both cognitive and socio-emotional dimensions of learning in life sciences and social studies education.

Abstract

This study aims to get the opinions of primary school 2nd and 3rd-grade students about the life studies lessons taught with distance education in the 2020-2021 academic year. For this purpose, open-ended questionnaires, document reviews, and interviews were used as data collection tools in the study, which was designed with a case study, one of the qualitative research designs. The study was continued with the students selected by criterion sampling from the 2nd and 3rd-grade students attending a public school on the European side of Istanbul. Content analysis was used in the analysis of the data. it has been determined that primary school students prefer to teach life studies at school rather than distance education. In addition, it was found that one of the common reasons for students who like or dislike distance education is "seeing their teachers and friends". However, the students stated that they learned the life studies lesson better at school, the lessons were more fun, and they could hear the teacher's voice better at school. It can be stated that primary school students prefer to teach the life studies course at school, and they think that the life studies course taught with distance education can be enriched by being taught in more active and different methods and places in out-of-school environments. In this study, the findings obtained from the views and drawings of the total students teaching the life studies course in the 2nd and 3rd grade level with distance education are limited. students want the distance life studies course to be taught in an active, comfortable environment and with alternative learning methods and techniques rather than classical methods.

Abstract

An educational museum is an active learning environment created for students’ participation (art, music, and drama) to learn by doing and experiencing, and didactic knowledge. This research seeks to determine the effect of the Storyline Method on students' perceptions and interpretations of historical artifacts through museum education. This research applied the phenomenology design as one of the qualitative methods, consisting of first-year students (20) in a public school in Istanbul. The students were trained for a total of 15 hours, 5 hours a week, on museum education with the Storyline Method. The research data consisted of interviews with children, pictures made by children, and diaries written by them. The collected data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis method. The research results found that the method of storyline positively affected the students' perceptions of historical artifacts. Also, as a result of the interviews of the students and their drawings, there was a positive change in students' perceptions of the importance and preservation of historical artifacts. In addition, as a result of the Storyline Method, the students had "happiness, excitement, sightseeing" feelings and thoughts about historical works.
