Abstract

Psychological problems such as anxiety have been reported to adversely affect students' learning outcomes.  This study explored the effectiveness of cognitive therapy with reflective activities on reducing Economics test anxiety among secondary school students. A randomizedcontrolledtrial experimental design was used. The sample sizewas120 senior secondary school students in South East Nigeria.A questionnaire titled "test anxiety scale" was used to collect data. It contained a demographic section and 20 items. To assign subjects to treatment or control groups, a randomization process was used.Subjectsin the treatmentgroup were subjectedto a cognitivebehavioural therapy (CBT) program.A three-time point evaluation was conducted with subjects in the treatment and control groups.Repeated measures and data collected were analysed with ANOVA. In comparison with the control group, research subjects exposed to CBT reportedlower testanxiety. In addition, at the follow-upmeasure, the scoresof researchsubjectsin the CBT groups weresignificantly lowerthan those of the control group. Hence,CBT significantly reducedEconomics students’ test anxiety. Theresearchers concludedthat the CBTprogramreducesEconomics students' test anxiety.

Abstract

The study examined the impact of remittances on economic development in Nigeria between 1980 and 2020. ARDL (Auto-regressive Distributed Lag) is used in this study. An analysis of the unit root test was conducted in which variables such as gross domestic product per capita, gross fixed capital formation and as well as inflation, which is integrated with order zero I(0), and variables such as exchange rate, household consumption expenditure and remittances are integrated of order one I(1). In order to confirm the long-term relationships among the variables, the Co-integration bound test was used. Long-term relationships were confirmed between the variables. In addition, the study was free of serial correlations and stable. The study revealed that a positive relationship exists between remittances, gross fixed capital formation and household consumption expenditure to gross domestic product per capital (economic development) and a negative relationship between real exchange rate and gross domestic product per capital. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that remittances have a positive impact and are linked to economic development in the long run, and that remittances should be encouraged as an alternative means of financing investment.

Abstract

Intervention programmes for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been extensively evaluated economically, and the related implementation costs are presumably high. This study reviewed the cost-effectiveness of PTSD intervention programmes and associated health benefits. The literature search was carried out between June and July 2023. The PRISMA guidelines for scoping review protocols were strictly followed. A literature search was conducted on the National Health Service (NHS) Economic Evaluation Database, PubMed, PsycInfo, and EconLit, this search yielded 16 studies. This review revealed that trauma-focused cognitive-behavioural therapy (+selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) (TF+CBT+SSRIs); prolonged exposure therapy; MDMA-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT); stepped care, screen and treatment; and the transmural trauma care model were cost-effective for PTSD treatment. The cost-effectiveness of intervention programmes that lasted 10 to 31 years was greater. In general, long-term intervention programmes have been associated with health benefits. It is also important to note that telemedicine, cognitive-behavioural therapy, biopsychosocial therapy, and individual therapeutic interventions are capital-intensive and inefficient. When disbursing funding for PTSD treatment around the world, the world health organisation (WHO) should keep in mind these identified interventions and the countries where they have been found to be cost-effective.

Abstract

The study examined the impact of trade openness on economic growth in some selected countries in West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Code d’Ivory, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone). We use the Panel dataset comprising 6 countries from West Africa during this period 1986- 2016. The study used the Fixed effect panel analysis for the estimation. The study tested for descriptive statistics and found that Cote d’ Ivory has the highest trade openness followed by Ghana, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Gambia that has the least trade openness. The study tested for unit root, at first difference 1(I), the variables are stationary, only inflation that was stationary at level I(0). The study uses the Pedroni Co-integration test for long-run association among trade openness, real gross domestic product, foreign direct investment, inflation and exchange rate and found that there exist a long run relationship. The result of the study reveals that trade openness has a positive and significant relationship between gross domestic product, it means that trade openness has an impact to economic growth in the selected West Africa countries.

Abstract

The use of computers in education and instruction is on the high side now given the recent crop of digital learners in this digital era. Technological-based learning is a way of pacifying the today’s technology-hungry learners. Therefore, this study was aimed at developing and testing the efficacy of Digital Concept Maps Package (DCMP) for online Economics instruction in senior secondary schools. The study was a research and development study that used quasi experimental pretest-posttest non equivalent control group design. The population of the study was 986 SS2 Economics students in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu state. The sample of the study consisted of 201 SS2 Economics students from six secondary schools in the zone. The instrument for data collection was Economics Achievement Test (EAT). The EAT was face validated by seven experts from University of Nigeria, Nsukka. EAT has a reliability index 0.72 using Kuder – Richardson (K-R). The experts also validated the developed DCMP using a Validation Rating Scale (VRS). The data analysis was done using Mean, Standard Deviation and ANCOVA. The findings of the study showed that experts’ validation ratings of DCMP were very high and that the students’ mean achievement score in DCMP group was significantly higher than that of their counterparts taught with lecture method in the control group. The researchers concluded that DCMP is very effective in enhancing students’ achievement in Economics. The implication of the findings is that both Economics teachers and students need to start using DCMP for online instruction in Economics for better students’ achievement.

Abstract

This study examined the mediating effect of students' self-efficacy on the relationship between entrepreneurial alertness (EA) and entrepreneurial skill development (ESD). This study employed a correlational survey research design to establish the relationship among the variables. The population of the study is 3423 senior secondary students in Enugu State.  The sample size is 379 students. Participants were purposely selected. The data were collected using the Entrepreneurial Alertness Questionnaire for Senior Secondary Students (EQS). The questionnaire's reliability was assessed using the Cronbach alpha and an overall reliability coefficient of 0.96 was obtained. Survey data were entered into SPSS and transferred to WarpPLS version 7.0 for analysis. Path analysis was used because it presents the network graphical relationship among variables. The path diagram and coefficients were utilized to answer the research questions, and the hypothesis was tested at a significance level of 0.05. There was a strong positive relationship between entrepreneurial alertness and skill development (β = 0.36; P=0.01) among senior secondary students. Students' self-efficacy was a significant mediator between entrepreneurial alertness and skill development which led to a 54% (r2 =54) variation in students’ entrepreneurship skills. This study concludes that students' self-efficacy significantly moderates the relationship between entrepreneurial alertness and skill development among secondary school students. Enhancing students' self-efficacy has both direct and indirect positive effects on their entrepreneurial skills development. Since self-efficacy significantly mediates the relationship between EA and ESD, educational administrators and teachers should ensure that instructional approaches stimulate secondary school students’ self-efficacy.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of unemployment rate on health outcomes in Nigeria from 1985 to 2022. The study adopts the annual time series data obtained from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN, 2022) Statistical Bulletin and World Development Indicators (WDI, 2022). This study uses life expectancy and child mortality as the two metrics for health outcomes. The ARDL Bounds Test for co-integration shows there exists long run relationship between the variables. The study employed the ARDL model and results show that unemployment rate has negative and positive impacts on the two metrics respectively in both the short run and long run. While other variables like population growth, total labor force, and government expenditure on health show statistically significant impact on life expectancy in Nigeria. The granger causality test shows that there is a bi-directional causality between unemployment rate and child mortality rate in Nigeria; whereas there is no causality running from unemployment rate to life expectancy rate in Nigeria. The study recommends that to improve life expectancy and reduce child mortality, there should be an investment in primary healthcare, health awareness campaigns, education, sustainable economic growth, social safety nets, population control strategies, and a skilled labor force.

Abstract

Gender has been identified as a predictor of mental health (stress, anxiety, depression) among university students. This study determined gender influence on the prevalence of financial stress, anxiety, and depression among undergraduate students studying Economics education in South-East public universities. The study employed ex post facto design. The population studied was 1,116 Economics education undergraduate students. The sample consisted of 294 respondents, which was gotten using Yamene’s (1967) sample size determination formula and selected using a multi-stage sampling technique. The study was guided by 3 research questions and 3 hypotheses. Financial Stress, Anxiety, and Depression Scale (FSADS) was used in gathering data. The reliability estimate of the instrument was 0.96 gotten using Cronbach Alpha. Research questions and hypotheses were tested using mean and t-tests at 0.05 level of significance respectively. The finding showed that students’ gender did not influence the prevalence of financial stress, anxiety, and depression among Economics education undergraduate students. It was recommended among other things that; improvement in the fund given to the students by their sponsors should be for all students because the financial challenges faced by the students are not gender-based.
