Abstract

This paper examines the phenomenon of soccer player migration from Africa to other continents, particularly Europe and Asia, and its impact on skill drain in African football. Using data from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), we analyze the extent and patterns of player migration, factors driving migration, and the implications for African football development and global soccer power dynamics. Our findings reveal a significant outflow of players from Africa to Europe, with economic disparities, better professional opportunities, and infrastructural gaps driving migration. West Africa emerges as the primary source of migrating players, particularly to European clubs. This trend has adverse effects on the development of local football leagues, reducing the quality of domestic competitions and diminishing the popularity of local leagues among football enthusiasts. To address skill drain and promote the sustainable development of soccer talent in Africa, we propose several strategies, including investing in youth development programs, establishing football academies, strengthening domestic leagues, and offering competitive salaries and incentives to players. By implementing these measures, African countries can retain talent locally, strengthen their leagues, and contribute to the growth and success of African football.

The study reveals that LIS lecturers in Nigerian higher education institutions have positive perceptions of scholarly publishing, recognizing its importance for professional growth and career advancement. Furthermore, the findings indicate that while academic journals are the primary outlet for communicating research findings, LIS lecturers also utilize a range of other channels, including conference proceedings, books, social media, and collaborative research projects, highlighting a diverse approach to scholarly dissemination. The findings emphasize the paramount importance of skills required to navigate the scholarly publishing process effectively. The study recommended that higher institutions of education should implement mentorship and training programs specifically designed to support lecturers in developing the skills needed for scholarly publishing.

Abstract

This study investigated the preferences and use patterns of e-books among postgraduate students at Prince Abubakar Audu University. Four (4) research objectives guided the conduct of this study. A descriptive survey method was used for the study and a questionnaire was used for data collection. Statistical tools used for this analysis were frequency counts, simple percentages, and mean scores. The study concludes that eBooks are highly valued by postgraduate students, due to their ability to enhance productivity and effective learning. The ease of use and clear graphical illustrations further contribute to the preference for eBooks, making them indispensable tools in the academic pursuits of postgraduate students. The study highlights that eBooks are extensively utilized for a variety of academic purposes, including coursework completion, research, exam preparation, assignments, and reference needs. Despite the evident benefits, the study reveals varying levels of satisfaction among students, with a significant portion using eBooks only to some extent. Several challenges impede the optimal use of eBooks, such as high costs, device-related inefficiencies, limited access to computers or the internet, readability issues, and the need for operational skills. The study recommended that university libraries should expand their eBook collections and seek partnerships with publishers to provide more affordable or even free access to essential academic texts and universities should consider initiatives to provide or subsidize devices optimized for reading eBooks, such as tablets or e-readers with suitable screen sizes.

Abstract

Purpose. This study examines the role of school librarians in promoting information literacy in secondary schools within a metropolitan city. It highlights the importance of information literacy, which involves the ability to access, evaluate, and use information effectively. Methodology. The research, using qualitative interviews with librarians from six selected local government areas, investigates how librarians support teachers and enhance educational outcomes. Key research areas include methods used by librarians to determine teachers' information needs, the extent of consultation with teachers on new acquisitions, how librarians inform teachers about available resources, and the adequacy and usage frequency of library resources. Results and discussion. The findings reveal varying levels of librarian engagement, with some actively collaborating with teachers and others taking a more passive approach. Challenges identified include time constraints and resource inadequacies. Conclusions. The study emphasizes the need for better communication and resource management to support information literacy. Despite recognizing its importance, gaps exist in understanding effective librarian practices for empowering teachers and students. Recommendations include fostering librarian-teacher collaboration, updating resource collections, and increasing awareness of available resources to enhance their use in education.
