Abstract

Globally, effective oral communication skills in English as a lingua franca have become increasingly important. However, many EFL learners, including those in Indonesia, experience apprehension about oral communication in culturally diverse environments. This study explores the phenomenon of oral communication apprehension among Indonesian EFL learners, focusing on identifying the sociocultural factors that hinder them. Using a single-case design, classroom observations, learner interviews, and a teacher focus group were conducted. Purposive sampling selected three ninth-grade students from selected private junior high school in Jember, who demonstrated apprehension in oral communication, and two EFL teachers experienced in addressing students' communication apprehension. Data analysis involved Ethnomethodological Conversation Analysis (ECA) and thematic coding. The findings indicate that factors like interruption, overlap, self-correction, self-monitoring, and reliance on the first language (L1) during oral communication contribute to apprehension. Additionally, sociocultural factors such as learners' attitudes, parental language background, language interference, and educational challenges were identified as contributing to oral communication apprehension among EFL learners. This study sheds light on the root causes of learners' struggles, encouraging them to overcome these challenges. It also offers valuable insights for educators to implement strategies that can alleviate the sociocultural burden faced by many EFL learners, especially relevant in Indonesia's context within the expanded circle of English language learning, where cultural nuances significantly influence language acquisition experiences.

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the development of a model of teaching speaking competence called Storytelling, a model of teaching English to enhance the students’ speaking competence. Further, the research also reveals the strengths and limitations of aims at Storytelling activity in SMK Negeri 1 Magelang. This research belongs to an educational research and development (or called R & D). The model was developed adapting Borg and Gall’s Model (1983) simplified into six steps. The steps are (1) Theories and Studies related to  Storytelling Technique or Product Analysis, (2) Planning and Preparation for doing Storytelling Technique, (3) Expert Validation and Revision Related to Storytelling Technique , (4) Developing Storytelling Technique in class, (5) Revision of Product , and (6) Final Product . The field tryout was conducted in one class of grade XI students of SMK Negeri 1 Magelang . The instruments used in this research were classroom observation sheet, students’ opened-questionnaire sheet and questions of students’ interview. The collecting data in this research were analyzed by using qualitative and analysis from Miles and Huberman (1994) consisting of four steps of collecting data, reducing data, displaying data, and verifying conclusions. Findings show that Storytelling as a model of teaching speaking shows some strengths; in development stage students’ speaking competence, students’ willingness to voluntary tell their experience in front of the class, the class’ participation in asking questions to the presenters, their willingness to attend the storytelling activity patiently, and also their disappointment due to not being given a chance to perform in front of the class get improvement. Furthermore, Storytelling is a meaningful activity which gives some benefits to the students such as developing feeling of self confidence and braveness and providing more chance to speak that can develop students’ speaking competence.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus pada pengamatan terhadap tingkah laku masyarakat Indonesia saat ini, bahwa Indonesia sebagai negara kepulauan dengan keanekaragaman yang cukup tinggi, masih sering dihadapkan dengan gesekan kepentingan antar umat beragama yang berbeda. Gesekan ini dapat dipicu oleh berbagai faktor, entah didukung adanya sikap superioritas, mayoritas dominan, ataupun kepentingan-kepentingan fanatis. Jika tidak segera diberi penegasan mengenai tindak preventif yang harus dilakukan, rawan menghasilkan percikan konflik yang bisa memicu terjadinya disintegrasi. Maka, dengan adanya penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pemahaman mengenai urgentivitas perilaku saling menghargai yang kemudian diwujudkan dalam bentuk bagaimana tindak implementasi yang dapat dilakukan dalam kehidupan nyata dengan kondisi negara majemuk yang terdiri atas berbagai ruang lingkup diferensiasi. Pluralisme dalam ranah peran konstruktif sebagai sebuah pemahaman yang harus digaungkan, memberi makna mengenai pentingnya pengakuan bahwa kemajemukan memiliki atmosfer yang terdiri atas perbedaan latar belakang yang kaya. Pemahaman yang baik mengenai sikap pluralisme akan membawa pada inisiatif sikap toleransi dalam berbagai perbedaan, sikap saling menghargai dan menghormati individu atau kelompok lain yang berbeda dengan kita dalam upaya menciptakan kerukunan antar umat beragama. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deksriptif berbasis pada studi kepustakaan dari sumber-sumber penelitian terdahulu. Pada penelitian yang dilakukan diperoleh hasil dan pembahasan bahwa diferensiasi yang ada sebagai efek yang ditimbulkan akibat negara majemuk bukan menjadi penghalang sebuah bangsa untuk bisa bersatu. Perbedaan yang ada merupakan sebuah seni yang menarik, maka bukan menjadi faktor pemicu sebuah lingkungan dari atmosfer yang berbeda-beda untuk terpecah belah, justru menjadi sebuah faktor pembangun menciptakan masyarakat yang bersatu-kesatuan dalam harmoni pancasila.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to describe the use of website for teaching and learning  English and to reveal the efficacy of using website media in learning English in class XI students of State Vocational School of 5 Bojonegoro, competency of agricultural product processing agribusiness skills. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative case study, with data obtained from interview recordings of informants consisting of the principal, English teacher, and eleventh-graders, and documentation. The findings show that the use of the website in agribusiness agricultural product processing class in teaching and English were effective because they carried out industrial work practices they could still attend lessons anywhere and anytime during breaks or at home. The obstacle faced is the problem of poor internet network when accessing the website. The same thing for teachers, can provide teaching materials and conduct evaluations anytime anywhere with the website. Obstacles encountered by teachers when students do not open the website, the teacher must find out the reasons students do not follow the learning process through the website. When students are carrying out industrial work practices, students' concentration is indeed focused on these activities. Keywords: information and communication technology, teaching English, website.
