Abstract

Convict cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) belonging to the Cichilidae family has inhabited in Tamblingan Lake, Buyan Lake and Beratan Lake. The existence of this fish species is suspected due to accidental introduction activities. The aims of this study ware to reveal differences in habitus, growth patterns and conditions of convict cichlid in the three lakes on the island of Bali. Samples of convict cichlid were taken by bubu traps, that placed in the littoral zone of the lake. 19 morphometric characters were measured using a digital caliper, then each fish sample was weighed. The growth pattern and condition of convict cichlid are known by using the equation of the length-weight relationship and the condition factor. There were 888 individuals of convict cichlid caught during this study, consisted of 385 fish from Tamblingan Lake, 371 fish from Buyan Lake, and 132 fish from Beratan Lake. Moreover, 108 fish consisting of 36 fish from each lake were further analyzed by measuring 17 additional morphometric characters. The results of measuring the morphometric characters of the observed convict cichlid had different variations for the characters of head length and predorsal length. There was diversity for several morphometric characters of the convict cichlid in Buyan Lake which are a collaboration of characters between the convict cichlid in Tamblingan Lake and in Beratan Lake, namely on the basic characteristics of the anal fin, dorsal fin base, body length, postorbital length, and tail height. The growth pattern of this species in the three lakes was negative allometric and the condition of this fish species was in good condition with the average value of condition factor ranging from 0.95–1.05.

Abstract

Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta Cuvier, 1817) is a small pelagic fish species which is the main catch commodity in purse seine and jukung fleets in the Bali Strait waters. Sustainable management is urgently needed for indian mackerel populations in Bali Strait waters to remain sustainable fishery. The availability of basic information such as biological aspects is very important as a fundamental resource in the management of indian mackerel in Bali Strait waters. The aims of this study were to reveal several biological aspects of mackerel such as growth patterns, condition factors, sex ratio, and size at first maturity of indian mackerel in Bali Strait waters. Sampling was carried out in May-September 2018. Samples of fish were taken from purse seine and jukung fleets using trawl nets and gill nets. Fish sample was measured, weighed and dissected to observe the sex and the gonadal maturity stage. The total number of indian mackerel samples was 167 individuals. Mackerel in the Bali Strait waters has a positive allometric growth pattern with fish in good condition. The sex ratio was in an unbalanced condition with the number of male fish being more than the female fish. The size at first maturity was 19.34 cm for male fish and 19.76 cm for female fish.

Abstract

Bali Strait water has contributed to the production of pelagic capture fisheries in FMA-573. The potential for fisheries in the Bali Strait is very diverse, especially small pelagic fish such as frigate tuna, bullet tuna, bali sardinella, scad fish and mackerel. Frigate tuna (Auxis thazard) is a pelagic fish from the Scombridae family. This fish can be found in tropical and subtropical waters. Information regarding frigate tuna on the southern coast of the Bali Strait has yet to be found to date. This research aims to reveal morphoregression, which includes the length-length relationship and growth patterns, as well as the condition of frigate tuna in the southern coastal waters of the Bali Strait for ecosystem-based fisheries management. Sampling of frigate tuna was carried out from February to July 2024. Fish samples were taken from traditional fishermen who used gill nets as fishing gear in the southern coastal waters of the Bali Strait. Each fish sample was measured for total length, fork length, and standard length and weighed to analyze the length-length relationship, growth patterns, and condition factors. The number of frigate tuna caught during the research was 356. The total length of the samples caught ranged from 274 – 416 mm, weighing 270.3 – 972.4 grams. Each character of the length of the frigate tuna has a close relationship. The fork length character is the most precise in estimating fish weight, so the fork length character is used to analyze the length-weight relationship. The growth pattern of frigate tuna is positive allometric with good conditions. The results of this research can be used as a basis for ecosystem-based management of tuna fisheries.
