Abstract

Indonesia's infant mortality rate is still relatively high when compared to other countries in Southeast Asia. This is caused by many things, including inadequate health facilities for underprivileged communities in rural areas. One solution that can be done is to make incubator equipment that is simple but reliable enough so that it can be loaned out for free to underprivileged families in need. Mini Factory for Portable Incubator is a fabrication activity carried out at the USK Mechanical Engineering Department that aims to produce incubator units designed by experts from the University of Indonesia. This fabrication activity is the result of a collaboration with BFLF Indonesia which funds program activities. The resulting incubator is then handed over to the BFLF Indonesia institution to then distribute it to underprivileged families in need on a free loan basis. The main target is underprivileged families in the province of Aceh. Another outcome is the wide publication of the Acehnese people through the mass media, both print and online.

Abstract

This study was focused on the characterize the hibridisation of kenaf and sugar palm fibre in reinforcing the polypropylene matrix. Addition of MAPP (Maleic Anhydride Polypropylene) was used as compatibilizing agent with variation of 2%, 3% and 5%. The specimen materials were prepared with 30% amounts of fibres while the ratios between kenaf and sugar palm fibre are 10:20, 15:15 and 20:10. The composites were fabricated using melt mixer technique and followed by compression molding process. The specimens were cut according ASTM Standard D790 for conducting the flexural testing. After testing done, the results shown that flexural strength of composites tend to decreased when the content of MAPP increased. The ultimate flexural strength was attained at 2% MAPP addition of the hybrid composites with 20% kenaf fibres. Among the composites with different ratios, the hybrid composites that contain more kenaf fibres exhibit the higher value in flexural strength than the composites that contain more sugar palm fibres.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Hybrid natural-natural fibre reinforced polymer composites become attractive alternative to seek the friendly-environmentally materials. Study on the durability level of the hybrid composites have the importance reason due to the role in application as structural function. This study focuses on examining the fatigue strength of polypropylene polymer composites reinforced with hybrid sugar palm-kenaf fibres. The hybrid composite materials were prepared by mixing the fibres and matrix with several compositions. There are five composition types of specimens that evaluated, such as 70:10:10, 70:15:15, 70:20:10, 80:10:10 and 90:5:5. The hybrid composites were composed by PP, sugar palm fibre and kenaf fibre. Furtheremore the tensile test were conducted to find the value of ultimate tensile strength for every specimens of hybrid composites. The fatigue test also were conducted with four level of stress i.e. 80%, 70%, 60% and 50%. The results show that in the lower level of stress, the hybrid composites with higher content of sugar palm fibre posses the better performance of fatigue life compare to the others

Abstract

The method of bio specific affinity for separation has gained attention and continues to be developed today. The affinity precipitation technique is continuously being refined because it is simpler, less complex, and highly economical without reducing product purity. Moreover, the obtained polymers can be reused and easily scaled up. The polymer used for affinity precipitation has functional groups that can act specifically, making it known as a “smart polymer.” The hydrophilic polymer and soluble liquid can be replaced with hydrophobic ones, becoming insoluble under certain conditions such as changes in pH, temperature, ionic strength, or the addition of reagents. This study aims to utilize ligand pairs for soluble liquid polymers based on macro ligands that are easily developed for large-scale applications. The research was conducted in two stages and is ready for enzyme purification testing. First, the synthesis of NIPAM polymer was carried out, with NIPAM and AIBN as fixed variables, while MPA served as the variable. Second, PABA conjugation was performed, where the synthesized NIPAM polymer was conjugated with the PABA ligand, making PABA characterization the changing variable in this phase. The dry weight of carboxylated Poly(NIPAM) obtained was 91.3%, carboxylated Poly(NIPAM)-co MPA 0.4 was 90.4%, and carboxylated Poly(NIPAM)-co MPA 0.6 was 88.9%. In the SEM test, the morphological structure of Poly(NIPAM) showed relatively harder surfaces. In the FTIR test, a significant change was observed in the spectra at 3300-2500 cm-1, which became weaker due to the presence of carboxyl groups characterized in Poly(NIPAM). The spectrophotometer test revealed the LCST condition at a temperature of 40°C. The conjugation of PABA onto Poly(NIPAM)-co-MPA 0.6 with 50 mg PABA showed better conjugation efficiency, with a conjugation yield of 52.6%. Incorporation of PABA shows recovery of trypsin between 65-80 %.

Abstract

Hybrid natural fibre polymer composites (HNFPCs) have emerged as an innovative and sustainable alternative to conventional fibre-reinforced composites, driven by the need for eco-friendly, lightweight, and high-performance materials. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of recent advancements in HNFPCs, focusing on material constituents, fabrication techniques, resulting properties, and industrial applications. Various hybrid systems, including natural–natural and natural–synthetic fibre combinations, are explored for their synergistic potential in improving mechanical strength, thermal stability, and moisture resistance. The influence of surface modification methods and processing parameters on the interfacial bonding and durability of composites is critically discussed. A comparative evaluation of key physical and mechanical properties is provided using recent literature (2020–2024), highlighting performance trends across different hybrid configurations. Applications in automotive, aerospace, construction, marine, and consumer product sectors demonstrate the industrial relevance of HNFPCs, with an emphasis on sustainability and regulatory compliance. Despite their promise, challenges remain in property variability, limited thermal performance, and recyclability. Future perspectives suggest that integrating bio-based matrices, advanced treatments, and data-driven design will be essential in advancing the next generation of multifunctional, green composites. This review aims to provide a valuable resource for researchers and industry stakeholders seeking to optimize the development and deployment of HNFPCs for structural and semi-structural applications.

Abstract

This study investigates the fatigue behavior of sugar palm fibre (SPF)-reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites with varying fibre contents (10 wt%, 20 wt%, and 30 wt%). The composites were fabricated using extrusion followed by hot press moulding. Tensile tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM D638 to determine the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and fatigue tests were performed under stress levels of 80%, 70%, 60%, and 50% of the UTS, following ASTM D7791. The results indicate that an increase in fibre content leads to a reduction in both tensile strength and fatigue life, likely due to poor interfacial bonding and fibre agglomeration. Fatigue life was found to be significantly higher at lower stress levels across all fibre contents. These findings provide valuable information about the potential and limitations of SPF/TPU composites for applications involving cyclic loading, particularly in lightweight and sustainable material applications
