Abstract

Language learners with a solid international posture are generally more willing to communicate in the foreign language they learn. However, studies on global posture could have been conducted better, especially for Arabic language learners. Therefore, this study aims to examine the level of readiness of students of Arabic studies programs in terms of international posture. This study uses a quantitative design by distributing online questionnaire instruments to 180 final-year students of the bachelor’s degree from three public universities in Malaysia, namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), and International Islamic University (UIA). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. The results showed that students in tertiary Arabic Studies programs in Malaysia report that international posture is in the moderate range but relatively lower. Students need to capitalize on all these aspects, which will directly and indirectly contribute to better achievement in learning Arabic.

Abstract

Arabic is a cornerstone of Islamic da’wah, serving as the primary medium for understanding the sources of Islam, such as the Quran and Hadith. However, a gap in Arabic language competency among prospective non-native preachers raises concerns about how this deficiency impacts the effectiveness of their da’wah activities. This study aims to evaluate the Arabic language proficiency among prospective non-native preacher students and its relationship with the effectiveness of their da’wah efforts. A quantitative approach was employed using a questionnaire administered to 72 third-year students from the Dakwah and Leadership Studies program at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Data were analyzed using SPSS to assess Arabic proficiency levels and their correlation with da’wah effectiveness. The findings indicate that while Arabic proficiency levels are moderate, there is a significant and positive relationship between Arabic language competency and the effectiveness of da’wah. This study proposes proactive measures such as intensive training and integrating Arabic into da’wah activities to enhance the language competency of future preachers. The study also highlights avenues for further research into Arabic proficiency and its role in da’wah effectiveness.

Abstract

Exposure is crucial for language acquisition, yet Arabic language learners in Malaysia face limited exposure. To accurately measure the extent of this exposure among higher education students, the researcher has developed the Arabic Language Exposure instrument (I-ALEx). This study applied the Rasch Model to validate the I-ALEx, which was designed to assess students' exposure to the Arabic language. Data were collected from 374 final-year Arabic language students from eight universities in Malaysia using a cross-sectional survey design. The I-ALEx includes 20 items divided into two sub-constructs: target language and culture, on a four-point Likert scale (strongly disagree to agree strongly). The quality of the items was evaluated using Winsteps version 5.2. The analysis indicated that all items on the I-ALEx satisfied the Rasch model requirements, thereby supporting the reliability and validity of the instrument. This validation supports the I-ALEx as an effective tool for evaluating Arabic language exposure among higher education students, thus enhancing the assessment practices in language education.

Abstract

I-Mufradaat is a language board game specifically designed and developed for learning Arabic vocabulary at the tertiary level, adapting the psychological basis of Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory alongside Bloom’s Taxonomy (Krathwohl & Anderson, 2009). This product primarily focuses on improving Arabic vocabulary and describes the steps for developing an Arabic Board game product to enhance Arabic vocabulary acquisition among Islamic Studies students at the beginner level at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA). The type of research is Design and Development research with the ADDIE development model, which is modified into five steps of development, namely 1) Need analysis of the product. (2) Design content. (2) Development of initial product draft. (4) Implementation of the end-product. (5) Evaluation. The instruments used were expert validation questionnaires. The respondents in this research are 234 students from the Faculty of Islamic Contemporary Studies at the University Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Terengganu. This research uses a questionnaire as a way of collecting data and the SPSS statistical package to analyze the data. The expected results are that there is a need for the development of an Arabic Board game, which is very appropriate as an innovative platform to be used in learning Arabic vocabulary. The features of Arabic Board game emphasize steps for making a game consisting of a game board, card, game manual and game assessment sheet.
