Abstract

The academic study of the relationship between religion and the protection of life is inevitable hence most intolerance incidents occur in the name of religion or for the religion. In general, religions are concerned with human well-being whether they are followers of that religion or not. Although Buddhism and Islam contain detailed explanations of the protection of life uniquely, the meetings of Buddhists and Muslims are most often portrayed as violent confrontations in the Modern world. So, the objective of this paper is to analyze the concept of protection of life through the ideas of Pāṇātipāta from Buddhism and Hifz al-Nafs from Islam for interreligious understanding between Buddhists and Muslims. This research applies library-based qualitative methodology, in which the researchers use data that includes textual analysis of written materials such as books, journal articles, and internet sources. The findings disclose that although Buddhism and Islam differ fundamentally, both religions share a similar scope for the protection of life which prioritize humanity as the major measure. Hopefully, this study will be able to show that these two ideas are significant when dealing with religious intolerance make a better understanding among Buddhists and Muslims and pave the way for interreligious dialogue for peace and harmony.

Abstract

This research explores the evolving debates on Prophetic Sīrah discourse within pluralistic societies, addressing the critical need for a comprehensive understanding among Muslims. Recognizing the fragmented nature of previous works, which often focus on isolated aspects of the Sīrah, this study aims to provide an integrated analysis relevant to contemporary multicultural settings. Employing a qualitative, library-based methodology, the research utilizes primary sources such as the Qur'an, Hadīth collections, and classical Sīrah texts, alongside modern commentaries. Through thematic and contextual analyses, key concepts like interfaith relations, social justice, and ethical conduct are identified and examined. Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is applied to understand how Sīrah discourse is constructed and communicated across different contexts. The study reveals significant gaps in the current understanding and application of the Prophetic Sīrah, particularly regarding its relevance for Muslim minorities in pluralistic societies. It emphasizes the importance of defining key terminologies and developing an interpretive framework that aligns with the minority context. The findings underscore the urgent need to reframe the Prophetic Sīrah from a pluralistic perspective to foster peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. The study concludes by attempting to bridge the gap between traditional Islamic teachings and modern pluralistic principles, encouraging a more inclusive and peaceful community.

Abstract

The celebration of Islamic festivals, primarily Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, traditionally encompasses spiritual practices and communal activities, including sports that foster unity among Muslims and others. However, in contemporary times, the role of sports within these celebrations has diminished, leading to a disconnect from the holistic nature of these festivities as practised during the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) time. This paper explores the historical significance of sports in Islamic festivals, drawing upon the Prophet's (PBUH) traditions that emphasise physical activities as an integral part of celebratory events. In contrast, other religious traditions, such as the celebration of Buddha's birthday in Sri Lanka, maintain sports as a central feature of their festival celebrations, often involving diverse communities, including Muslims. This paper argues that reintroducing sports into Islamic festival celebrations can serve as a vital platform for intercultural and interfaith exchanges, enhancing mutual understanding in pluralistic societies. By analysing the potential of sports to bridge communities, this study highlights how such integration can contribute to a more inclusive and harmonious social fabric, aligning with the broader goals of interreligious engagement and cooperation.

Abstract

Kalᾱm and Its Relevance in the Muslim Scholarship of Religion is both an academic intervention and a theological invitation. It calls on Muslim scholars to reclaim their rich heritage of reasoned faith, to revisit the tools of Kalᾱm with renewed vigour, and to engage with other religious traditions not from a place of insecurity but from a confident and principled commitment to truth. This book is a must-read for scholars of Islamic theology, students of comparative religion, and anyone concerned with interfaith dialogue. It bridges the gap between Usul al-Din, Kalᾱm and modern religious studies, not by diluting Islamic principles but by reaffirming their relevance in a world that desperately needs more principled, informed, and compassionate conversations across faiths.

Abstract

This paper investigates the legitimate authority of the Prophetic Sīrah (biography) as a source of legal and ethical deductions within Islamic jurisprudence. While classical scholarship unanimously considers the Sīrah an essential component of the Sunnah (Prophetic tradition), its independent capacity to serve as a foundational basis for deriving rulings has been a subject of nuanced analysis. By distinguishing Sīrah from Sunnah, this study critically examines the extent to which the Sīrah can function as a source of normative guidance. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in library research, the paper utilizes descriptive, analytical, and comparative approaches to scrutinize classical and contemporary scholarship. The findings demonstrate that Prophetic Sīrah, beyond its narrative value, possesses significant legislative weight in contextualizing and applying Islamic principles to the evolving realities of Muslim life. In the context of modern complexities, the Sīrah not only reinforces Muslim identity but also provides actionable frameworks for ethical and legal reasoning. This research contributes to the broader discourse on Islamic legal theory by reaffirming the integrative role of Sīrah alongside the Sunnah in shaping jurisprudential thought and moral conduct.
