Abstract

Indonesia is known for its high biodiversity, particularly in herbal medicine, with cashew trees being one of the most used plants. Cashew leaves contain proteins, fats, carbohydrates, calcium, and vitamins B1 and B2. They are used as herbal medicine in various parts of Indonesia, including kidney disease treatment, mouthwash, and kanker disease drugs. The ethanol extract from cashew leaves contains secondary metabolite compounds such as phenolic, flavonoids, and tannins. The bioactivity of cashews includes antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammation properties. The cardanol compound from cashew leaves has the highest antioxidant activity compared to cardol and anacardic acid, with IC50 values of 3,22±0.07 ?g/ml and 0,06±0.01 ?g/mL, respectively. This research aims to isolate phenolic compounds from cashew leaves, identify their structure, and measure antioxidant activity. The study analyzed the phytochemical screening of A. occidentale leaf extracts, revealing variations in their components. Hexane extracts were positive for tannin and terpenoid compounds, while dichloromethane extracts were positive for all compounds except saponin and cardiac glycoside. Ethyl acetate extracts were positive for terpenoids and flavonoids. Methanol extracts were positive in nearly all assays except for anthraquinone. The isolated compound from A. occidentale leaf yielded a yellow powder with a melting point of 247-248?C. The crude extract had an IC50 value of 59.19 ± 2.38 ?g/mL, while the phenolic separated element had a value of 191.815 ± 1.07 ?g/mL. Flavonoids are a group of antioxidants that act as chelators and scavengers of free radicals, targeting hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals, superoxide anions, and peroxynitrites. The Anacardiaceae family species contain numerous phenolic compounds with potent antioxidant properties, which can help manage elevated free radical generation conditions. Further research is needed to determine the specific phenolic chemicals responsible for the antioxidant activity of the species and evaluate their contribution to this activity. Anacardium occidentalale L. leaves, seeds, and stem bark extracts have been found to have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The traditional herbal medicine of Indonesia, Jamu, is a valuable source of antioxidants and prooxidants

Abstract

One of the medical conditions that leads to the highest death rate worldwide is sepsis. In the presence of several variables and concomitant conditions, the mortality rate from sepsis keeps rising in proportion to the severity of the condition. It is quite concerning when sepsis patients have proven COVID-19. Some patient subgroups and inflammatory mediators may have increased cytokine release as a result of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. A number of laboratory tests can be used to diagnose COVID-19 and sepsis, one of which is counting leukocytes, platelets, and creatinine levels as indicators of organ failure. The purpose of this study is to characterize the platelet, leukocyte, and creatinine levels in individuals who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 sepsis. This study's methodology employed a descriptive observational technique using 36 patient samples from Genteng Banyuwangi General Hospital, selected based on laboratory examination results (leukocyte count, platelets, and creatinine levels), as well as characteristics related to gender, age, comorbidities, and hospital discharge status. The findings revealed that female patients aged 20 (55.6%) made up the bulk of patients with confirmed COVID-19 sepsis, whereas the largest age group consisted of 9 (56.25%) individuals who were over 60. Twenty-two (61.1%) sepsis patients with proven COVID-19 had a high leukocyte count, and of those with confirmed COVID-19 and sepsis, the majority had normal platelets depending on the platelet count. Nine (56.25%) male patients with confirmed COVID-19 sepsis had elevated creatinine levels, whereas 10 (50%) female patients had normal findings. Patients with sepsis who had verified COVID-19 were generally deceased upon hospital release, with no comorbidities in 14 patients (or 50% of the total), and diabetes mellitus in 13 patients (or 46.4%).

Abstract

Blood sugar levels, or blood glucose levels, are crucial for overall health and are regulated by the pancreas through insulin. Normal blood sugar levels range between 70-99 mg/dL when fasting and up to 140 mg/dL two hours after eating. Abnormal blood sugar levels can suggest a variety of health issues, including hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels caused by excess insulin, certain drugs, or illnesses such as diabetes) and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels associated with diabetes). Regular blood sugar monitoring is necessary, especially for diabetics. Guava, a tropical fruit, includes a variety of phytochemicals that have been linked to pharmacological benefits such as antibacterial capabilities. This research uses an extraction process involving solid-liquid extraction or maceration, with methanol being the optimal solvent. The extract yields 9.51%. Wistar rats are used to investigate its antidiabetic efficacy. The rats are divided into three groups: positive control, negative control, and extract treatment. Diabetes is induced by subcutaneous injection of Alloxan, followed by oral administration of the methanol extract. Blood glucose levels are assessed after fasting for 6-8 hours. The extract from dried Guava leaf powder yields a concentrated extract with a 9.51% yield. In vivo assessments showed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels in rats treated with guava leaf extract, suggesting potential anti-hyperglycemic effects. The phenolic compounds in guava leaves contribute to antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic effects. The study highlights the potential therapeutic effects of guava mint leaves and their extract components for diabetes management and antioxidant health benefits.
