Abstract

Older people in Indonesia are experiencing a significant increase in population, often accompanied by a decline in brain function and the risk of dementia. SENADA (Brain Health Exercise) emerges as a potential approach for enhancing cognitive function in older people through simple movements. Further research and information are needed to support its use in elderly healthcare practices. This study employed a case report approach with nursing care to evaluate the effectiveness of SENADA in older individuals with dementia. Interventions were conducted regularly with structured data collection using MMSE. The aim of this research was to assess the effectiveness of SENADA in improving cognitive function in older people with dementia through a case report approach with nursing care. Interventions were given twice daily for five minutes. Data were collected through interviews, interventions, evaluations, and documentation. Results demonstrated that SENADA therapy in patient Ny. A was effective for enhancing cognitive function in older people, as evidenced by the change in MMSE outputs from moderate to no cognitive impairment.

Abstract

The proportion of the elderly population is increasing every year, and the elderly are experiencing various changes, both in physical, mental and social aspects. The elderly are residents aged over 60 years. Elderly people often experience various psychological problems such as loneliness, isolation, helplessness, lack of self-confidence, post-power syndrome, anxiety disorders and depression. Depression is a mood disorder that can cause prolonged feelings of sadness and persistent loss of interest, characterized by prolonged sadness, mood swings, and lack of interest in activities. The tool used to measure the level of depression in this case report uses the GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale) instrument. In this case report, the results of an assessment of one 66 year old client were obtained with a GDS score of 11 which indicated moderate depression. Management of depression can use pharmacological or non-pharmacological therapy. This case report refers to the Indonesian Nursing Intervention Standards (SIKI) using progressive muscle relaxation (ROP). The ROP intervention was carried out at BPSTW Abiyoso Wisma Talkondo for seven days with three evaluations. The results obtained were that the client experienced a decrease in the level of depression with a score of 5, namely mild depression. It can be concluded that ROP is effective in reducing depression levels in the elderly.

Abstract

Geriatric syndromes are major issues for the elderly, hence calling for research that detects the syndromes’ presence and what interventions are suitable for addressing elderly needs. The research descriptively reports field findings concerning health and nursing problems of the elderly in Kalirandu, Bantul. It engages with field trip assignments from the gerontic nursing course or block, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The assignments aim to elevate student learning experiences by providing them with hands-on experiences related to geriatric syndromes in the community. The fifth-semester students in the school of nursing carried out 160 visits to 160 elderlies in the research area. Respondents or treated elderlies were determined using the consecutive sampling mechanism. The treatments comprised hypertension screening, body mass index, and distributing research forms for geriatric syndromes. Sleep disorders and falling risks were the two most common nursing problems identified. Most interventions given to the elderly included education regarding geriatric syndromes, diets, zikr therapy, and relaxation therapy. Learning programs were conducted through field trips, proven to contribute positively to enhancing student understanding of how to give nursing care plans to the elderly. The synergy between the campus and the community must be optimized to escalate the health quality of the elderly.
