Abstract

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is an emerging concern in the Philippines as its numbers continue to increase, hence, identifying risk factors of AUD is a necessity. Throughout the years, the contributing factor of the familial environment in the form of expressed emotion (EE) was associated with relapse of various psychological disorders including AUD. However, a scarcity of local literature investigating the aforementioned variable is evident. This study was conducted to elucidate the relationship of expressed emotion, congruence, and the risk of having AUD, and the moderating role of congruence among unemployed young adult males. This research utilized a cross-sectional, explanatory research design (n = 52) in which the relationship of the variables was analyzed through partial correlation and moderation analysis. Following data analysis, EE has a weak positive relationship with AUD tendency. It was also ascertained that congruence and EE have a moderate inverse relationship. However, no significant relationship was found between AUD tendency and congruence. Furthermore, it was revealed that congruence does not moderate the strength and degree of the relationship between EE and AUD tendency. Low-risk alcohol consumption must be maintained, and congruence must be sustained to regulate EE at a minimal level. Their families are encouraged to persist in their positive relationships with them, as these would likely boost their self-acceptance and contain the risk of developing AUD. Regulating the drinking habits is recommended as the family’s negative interactions towards the person would be least likely to occur. Keywords: expressed emotion; alcohol use disorder tendency; congruence

Abstract

This study aimed to explore whether expressed emotion moderates Generation Z's openness to experience and help-seeking attitude toward telepsychology and the extent to which the expressed emotion modifies that relationship. A total of 395 people belonging to the said generation participated in an online survey accomplished through Google Forms. The study used a correlational research method that focused on moderation to examine the relationship between Generation Z's openness to experience and their attitude toward telepsychology. Hence, this study sought to increase Generation Z's knowledge of mental health, including Philippine mental health conditions, as they develop a sense of responsibility, reduce ambiguity through telepsychology platforms, and improve their communication skills, which are crucial for ideal emotional socialization. Results have shown that expressed emotion does not seem to have a noticeable effect on Generation Z's attitudes toward seeking help through telepsychology. Nevertheless, there was a favorable correlation between being open to new experiences and having a willingness to seek help through telepsychology. The study adds to the growing body of knowledge on the mental health dynamics of Filipino Generation Z, and it offers beneficial information for the generation, professionals in mental healthcare, educators, and policymakers looking for enhanced support systems and interventions that meet the specific psychological needs of Filipino Generation Zoomers. Keywords: expressed emotion; generation z; help-seeking attitude; openness to experience; telepsychology

Abstract

This study explored the experiences of solo parents who provide simultaneous support to their minor children and senior parents in selected resettlement areas in Cavite, Philippines. Specifically, it sought to determine the reasons for their role pursuance, unravel the adversities they encountered and the coping strategies they employed, and identify their motivations for continuously juggling their multigenerational responsibilities. Using narrative analysis, the stories of eight participants selected through non-proportional quota sampling were uncovered and interpreted. Findings revealed that the high regard they placed on cultural family values and traditions drove them to become caregivers for two generations. The demands of having young and old dependents led them to face financial constraints, unfulfilled aspirations, work interference, and health-compromising behaviors associated with their role as family mediators. Social support systems and multiple sources of livelihood played a significant part in easing these burdens. Despite the hardships entailed in their household responsibilities, they managed to carry on due to the long-term care needs of family members and the positive feelings they acquired from caregiving. This may further support the need for implementation or amendment of policy programs intended to provide recognition and workplace consideration for individuals in this unique familial position.
