Abstract

Together with the influence of globalisation and sustainable development goals, urbanisation profoundly impacts the service delivery capacity of African subnational governments. Unfortunately, in the context of Zimbabwean local authorities, particularly urban councils, these amplified demands were not accompanied by increased capacity. Unsurprisingly, service delivery woes have become the norm. The question that arises is: Are urban local authorities in Zimbabwe, without the involvement and active participation of other stakeholders, able to confront and overcome service delivery challenges, and spearhead local development? In this article, the researchers present the impediments to collaborative governance in Zimbabwe’s urban councils and insights towards an enabling environment for collaborative governance. The researchers gathered evidence to substantiate this line of argument through qualitative desktopresearch.

Abstract

The study examines the factors influencing the effective implementation of gender equality in the Newcastle Local Municipality (NLM). The study, being qualitative in nature, is based on a single case study considering the NLM as a locus. Information is gathered through literature review. The data is analysed through conceptual analysis. The findings obtained indicate a gender disparity at the NLM in terms of councillor and management positions. There are also social, economic, political, ideological, and institutional factors hampering the achievement of gender equality and, these are comprehensively addressed in the study. The study offers recommendations which can be applied in NLM and other municipalities to enhance gender equality. The importance of involving local government and municipalities in the fight against gender inequality cannot be underestimated. It is therefore necessary to address the existing research gap concerning gender equality in local government.

Abstract

Humans are compelled to work to have financial security, as well as to achieve purpose, fulfillment, and connections with other workers who realize lower-level workplace requirements like peer group affiliation, peer approval, and interpersonal engagement. Due to the rigorous nature of the office, there are several elements, like stress, covid-19, work pressure, etc., that may interfere with relationships, teamwork, and alliances between people. Employees may experience mental, emotional, and psychological problems because of this condition, which causes emotional stress that has an impact on their general health. These factors are incorporated into workplace employee wellness programmes (EWPs) as part of human resource management. Additionally, the EWP is linked to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, which calls for improved health and wellness. The article's goal is to examine obstacles to SDG 3 implementation and offer various organizational measures that must be put in place to guarantee workplace wellbeing for employees. The qualitative research methodology is used to gather pertinent data. The findings demonstrate that the successful implementation of EWP may help both employers and employees manage wellness to maintain levels of employee performance and, consequently, organizational productivity. The study offers policy recommendations considering the need for organizations and employees, both individually and collectively, to find ways to look after their health (physical wellness), behaviour (emotional and psychological wellness), and remain connected to themselves and the world. The study also offers ways to de-stress through exercise, yoga, prayer, meditation, online help groups, virtual consultations, etc. incorporating spiritual wellness.

Abstract

Several issues affect South Africa, including poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, crime, floods, and climate change. These difficulties have led to civil unrest, mass frustration, as well as community protests. The government is generally expected to provide better services in the areas of suitable housing, energy supply, water and sanitation provisions, improved employment and educational opportunities, suitable infrastructure, and workable health facilities. Aside from all these difficulties, South Africa is also dealing with an electricity crisis that is impacting people's daily lives through frequent, advanced, or interval-based load-shedding. The water system needs urgent repair. There are constant leaks from the rusty, old water pipes. Some provincial suburbs go without water or electricity for a few hours or days at a time. There are many items on the list. The article attempts to gather data to support the cause of subpar service performance. There are numerous demands for service delivery, but there aren't enough resources to fulfill them. Insufficient financial, human, technical, and technological resources make it difficult for the government to provide all the facilities that are requested. Protests about service delivery result from unfulfilled demands. To provide seamless services without regard to time or location constraints, the study intends to investigate the challenges facing the traditional mode of service delivery. This transformation will be achieved through the adoption of technological interventions. Additionally, the study investigates a few potential roadblocks to the service delivery procedures. Information for the qualitative study is gathered through documents and literature reviews. Conceptual and document analysis are used to analyse the gathered data. According to the study, by using appropriate digitalised coordination and a sufficient infrastructure based on information technology, interventions related to the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) may be able to completely change the way services are delivered.
