Abstract

The editorial team of Jurnal Psikologi is excited to announce the renewal of our aims and scope to include emerging areas of psychological research, while reinforcing our commitment to the study of Indonesian psychology. The revised aims and scope offer a more precise and direct focus on understanding the unique ways cultural, social, environmental, and technological influences shape the mental processes and behavior of Indonesians. These insights can be presented in the form of original research and review articles, as we recognize that human knowledge can flourish and advance thanks to the empirical results reported in original research, while reviews help to refine our awareness of important subjects. In highlighting the unique psychological landscape of Indonesia, our goal is to enrich the psychological research based on Indonesians’ vast and diverse characteristics, enabling both local and global society to discover an in-depth understanding and empathetic utilization of the information. We are especially interested in several topics regarding the Indonesian psyche, including the influences of environment, technology, and the digital world. Why? We argue that these aspects play a crucial role in (re)shaping and cementing the psychological landscape of Indonesia. Other topics, such as neuroscience and cognition, also potentially contribute significantly to explaining the psychology of the Indonesian people. With the updated aims and scope in mind, we encourage authors to explicitly address the impact of their work on the current state of propose improvements to existing practices. The editor and reviewers will specifically evaluate this discussion within the manuscript.

Abstract

Parental attachment has an immense influence on adolescent development, including in Generation Z. Some factors can affect attachment development, such as social environment and culture. This study aimed to compare attachment patterns between Generation Z adolescents from matrilineal and patrilineal backgrounds in Indonesia. The parental attachment was measured using the Indonesian version of the Inventory of Parent Peer Attachment-Revised (IPPA-R). Participants in this study were 206 adolescents, with Batak (n= 69) and Minangkabau (n=134) ethnic backgrounds. Data analyses used were Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon rank-sum test. This study showed no difference in parental attachment between the two groups, indicating that there is a shift in parental attachment levels in Indonesia. Trust, communication, and alienation could predict preferred attachment figures for the matrilineal group. Meanwhile, the preferred attachment figure in the patrilineal group was predicted by trust and communication. This research could help parents understand the importance of communication, trust, and alienation and their relations with parental attachment level, especially in Generation Z with Minangkabau and Batak cultural backgrounds.

Abstract

Intimate partners are reported by the National Commission on Violence Against Women to be the primary perpetrators of sexual violence. However, the government has limited its perpetrator-focused intervention to enforcing the law. Meanwhile, there has been a growing interest in understanding Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) ecologically and developing interventions that go beyond punishing the perpetrators. This systematic literature review aimed to explore the risk factors of IPV perpetrators in Indonesia. There were 3309 articles generated from databases. Five articles were included, and the result confirms the scarcity of Indonesian papers on: (1) the usage of the IPV term; (2) the exploration of IPV perpetrator risk factors; and (3) the poor quality of existing research on IPV. It is evident within the five articles that individual and societal risk factors are interconnected in Indonesia. Recommendations are threefold: (1) researchers are recommended to employ the term IPV, include couples despite their marital status, and explore risk factors of IPV perpetrators; (2) clinicians are suggested to adopt the ecological framework and collaborate with government and non-government institutions to advocate the importance of perpetrator-focused interventions; (3) institutions are suggested to design preventive measures according to the ecological model.

Abstract

Indonesian gay men living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) suffer from the effects of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the physical and psychological aspects of their lives, while also being burdened by the stigma from society related to their sexual orientation and status as people living with HIV (PLHIV). Unfortunately, this topic is inadequately explored in Indonesian academic literature. This study addresses this gap utilizing concurrent-embedded mixed method design by combining quantitative assessments (Satisfaction With Life Scale [SWLS]) with qualitative data from three open-ended questions. The instrument was administered online by adopting a snowball sampling technique to recruit study participants, being: (1) Indonesian men; (2) aged 18 and older; (3) self-identifying as gay men; and (4) living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Analysis of data from 84 study participants from 16 provinces found that 60.7% of the study participants have their life satisfaction score in the Slightly Satisfied to Very Satisfied categories. Self-acceptance, gratitude, and pressure emerged as dialectical aspects of their perceived life satisfaction, with safety and social support identified as primary concerns. These findings highlight the need for further study and research into the life satisfaction of other minority groups, especially Indonesian gay men living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Communities, experts, and policymakers are encouraged to raise awareness about human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related issues to foster safety and social support. Ensuring the availability of equitable mental health services and access to employment and entrepreneurship is also a critical concern.

Abstract

There is a growing interest in multisystem resilience within disaster studies; however, the resilience of disaster volunteers remains an underexplored area. This review aims to bridge this gap by analyzing existing studies that examine how internal and external systems influence the psychological resilience of disaster volunteers. Specifically, it addresses the question: How is multisystem resilience conceptualized and supported among disaster volunteers in the existing literature? We applied a narrative review approach and retrieved literature from the Scopus database, covering all available publication years. The analysis was supported by thematic coding using ATLAS.ti software to identify and extract key themes from the selected studies. Out of 602 articles and proceedings screened, only 11 met our inclusion criteria. Findings indicate that, compared to other forms of civic engagement, disaster volunteering is more likely to involve physical and mental health risks. At the same time, it provides opportunities to strengthen well-being and resilience. This review highlights the importance of a multisystem resilience perspective, emphasizing the dynamic interaction between internal and external systems in fostering the resilience of disaster volunteers.

Abstract

The growth of the digital sector during the Coronavirus Disease (COVID) 19 pandemic has an impact on how individuals use technology and behave in social situations, introducing new work opportunities. However, work participation in the digital industry based on gender at the global level is still significant which can have an impact on gender gaps and the role of female workers. In terms of access to production and distribution of roles, female workers in the digital industry make widespread similarities with the presence of male workers. In-depth research is required to understand whether or not there is a gender gap in the digital industry, especially in the context of Indonesia, as a modern phenomenon. Previous studies have begun to discuss gender participation in non-digital industries, such as the garment sector, but have not yet discussed the dynamics of the gender gap and the role of women. This study utilizes social role theory to quantify the extent of the gender gap and the dynamics of women's roles in industrial technology. This study examines 3 female workers in 3 distinct digital technology companies using a qualitative method and a multiple case study approach. The results of this study reveals that the digital technology industry in the education, technology, and transportation sector is inclusive and promotes the role of women despite the fact that woman constitute a minority of workers. The role of women is supported by the equal of expectations towards the role of female workers, including the system of labor allocation and rewards that do not take gender into account. This research can further serve as a reference for other digital enterprise sectors and other industries when developing policies and programs to support and enhance the work role of women.
