Abstract

Children's storybooks play a crucial role in children's language development, thus demanding meticulous attention from authors in word selection and usage within the narrative. A comprehensive understanding of the morphological processes, particularly affixation, is essential for grasping the writing style. This study focuses on scrutinizing the morphological processes, particularly affixation, specifically the prefix ‘ber-’, on verbs. The analysis centers on the fundamental form and semantic formation. The dataset comprises all verbs prefixed with ber- sourced from a children's storybook titled "Cerita Negeri Tetangga: Kumpulan Dongeng Asia Tenggara" by Hapsari Hanggarini. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach to present the data. The findings reveal four fundamental forms of verbs with the prefix ‘ber-’and seven semantic formations. The prevalent fundamental form constitutes free morphemes, with the dominant semantic formation reflecting active actions. These findings suggest that affixation processes in children's storybooks tend to remain straightforward, catering to concepts accessible to children.

Abstract

Conversation Analysis (CA) is crucial in discourse studies, focusing on everyday interactions. This study examines the conversational styles in the Indonesian talk show Endgame, hosted by Gita Wirjawan. Previous research on Indonesian talk shows has primarily explored speech acts and pragmatic aspects, with little emphasis on openings and closings. This study addresses that gap by applying CA to analyze these segments in "Endgame" episodes. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study analyzes data from the four most-watched Endgame episodes as of November 2023. The findings reveal that Endgame adopts a high considerateness style, characterized by slow-paced dialogue, pauses, and minimal interruptions, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The opening starts by greeting viewers, introducing guests, and highlighting their roles, set as a preview to the following discussion. Meanwhile, the closings provide insightful messages, maintaining a relaxed ambiance. By examining adjacency pairs and interactional patterns, this study enhances understanding of how Endgame shapes its conversational style and engages its audience, contributing to broader discussions on media communication and talk show sociolinguistics.

Abstract

Labuhan Hajad Dalem is an essential ritual in Yogyakarta’s tradition; its primary purpose is to represent prayer and to perform a spiritual cleansing by placing and leaving out some offerings in particular sacred places. Therefore, this research aims to answer how the naming creation of the offerings, especially the sinjang and semekan using syntactic analysis and an anthropological linguistics approach. Six names of sinjang and fourteen names of semekan are sourced from the official Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat website. The names follow a pattern of phrases and clauses, primarily consisting of noun phrases constructed with single nouns, adjectives, or combinations thereof. Additionally, there are clauses formed by noun-verb or noun-verb phrase structures. These names predominantly feature nouns related to various birds and plants, such as perkutut (zebra dove) and mlathi (jasmine), alongside adjectives representing colors like gadhung (green) and pethak (white). Using these colors in the names signifies gratitude, often towards nature and the divine. Furthermore, the selection of nouns reflects the daily life and surroundings of the Yogyakarta community, highlighting the interconnectedness between cultural traditions and local environments.
