Abstract

The distribution of mangrove plants is influenced by various factors, including the physical characteristics of the soil. The study was conducted to determine the physical characteristics of the soil in the mangrove ecosystem in Bone Bay, Palopo City. Soil sampling was performed using the purposive sampling method in five points with three replications based on the equations of growth and density of mangrove vegetation. Physical characteristics of the soil sample, including texture, color, permeability, bulk density, and soil porosity, were analyzed in the laboratory. The results showed that the dominant soil textures were squirming and sandy loam. The dominant soil color was very dark gray. Soil permeability is high and belongs to the fast criteria, with the highest value of 20.0 cm/hour at the fourth depth point of 0-30. The highest bulk density at the fourth depth point is 31-60 cm, with a value of 0.81 gr/cm3. At the same time, the porosity of the soil is classified as a high or good criterion, with the highest value found at the third depth point of 0-30 cm with a value of 77%. In the future, soil physical characteristics data can be used as preliminary information or databases for the government to organize and preserve mangrove forests.

Abstract

The use of undergrowth as medicine has been carried out by many people, especially traditional communities who live far from health services whose use has been passed down from generation to generation. Attention to traditional medicines has shown an increase, this is evident from the use of natural medicine in developed countries reaching 65% while it is estimated that there are 9,600 plant species that have been utilized by 400 various ethnic or ethnic groups in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to determine the potential of the undergrowth used as traditional medicine in Sangtandung Village, North Walenrang District, Luwu Regency. There are two stages in this research, namely for species diversity using the method of determining plots for collecting data on species diversity, while the potential for medicine use uses an interview method with respondents who have been determined using a purposive sampling method. Data analysis for species diversity used is an important value index analysis by calculating the values of density, relative density, frequency, relative frequency, while for the potential of undergrowth as medicine using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that there were 18 types of undergrowth identified as potential as traditional medicine in Sangtandung Village and the embarrassed daughter plant (Mimosa pudica Lin) had the highest IVI. Of the total 18 types of undergrowth that have the potential to be used as traditional medicine, there are 9 types that have been used by the community as medicine and 9 types that have not been utilized by the people of Sangtandung Village. Among them are putrimalu (Mimosa pudica Lin), urang aring (Eclita prostrate), sidaguri ( Sida rhombifolia), pakis (Polypodiophyta), bayam duri (Amaranthus Spinosus), bayam malabar (Basella alba), cakar ayam (Selaginella doederleinii), meniran (Phyllanthus urinaria), and gelinggang (Cassia Alata). Generally, the leaves are used by boiling and drinking the boiled water to treat various diseases.

Abstract

Insects are the most numerous groups of organisms in the phylum of Arthropods and have a very important role in the continuity of ecological functions. This study aims to determine the diversity of nocturnal and diurnal insect species in PT. Sumber Graha Sejahtera of production forest area in West Wara District. This study used 2 methods are plot and line transect. The traps used are Light traps for nocturnal insects used on 5 plot and Sweep Net for diurnal insects used on 3 line transect. The results showed that there were 36 species of insects consisting of 14 nocturnal species and 22 diurnal species. The diversity index of nocturnal insects were included in the medium category (2.57) with the highest population density found in the species Aedes albopictus which is 0.0160, while the diversity index of diurnal insects were included in the high category (3.02) with the highest population density found in the species Valanga nigricornis which is 0.0056.

Abstract

This study investigated the ethnobotanical knowledge of the indigenous Rongkong community in Rinding Allo Village, Rongkong District, North Luwu Regency, Indonesia, with particular emphasis on plant resource utilization and its relationship with local wisdom, cultural practices, and forest-based ecosystem services. Data were collected through field surveys, participatory observation, and semi-structured interviews with 59 respondents selected using the Slovin sampling formula. The findings revealed that the community utilizes 71 plant species belonging to 43 botanical families for various purposes, including food, traditional medicine, livestock feed, construction materials, fuelwood, handicrafts, and socio-cultural as well as religious ceremonies. Leaves were the most frequently utilized plant part, followed by roots, stems, rhizomes, fruits, and other plant organs. The diverse use of plant resources reflects the community’s long-standing ecological knowledge and contributes to household subsistence, local livelihoods, cultural identity preservation, and the sustainability of forest ecosystem functions. Traditional ethnobotanical knowledge is transmitted across generations through customary practices and oral traditions; however, it is increasingly threatened by socio-cultural transformation and modernization. Therefore, systematic documentation, revitalization of local knowledge systems, and community-based conservation strategies are essential to safeguard traditional ethnobotanical heritage while supporting biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management. This study highlights the important role of indigenous knowledge in strengthening community–forest relationships within a sustainable development framework.
