Abstract

The aims of this research is to investigate the contribution of language production ability of children aged 4 years. In Indonesia, there are not many studies on children’s language ability. There are not many studies based in Indonesia, where Indonesia is a country with the most cultures in the world which is one of the factors that influence the ability of children’s production. This study explanined about sentence production. Sentence production begins with captures message from which speech will be produced, and then uses the sentence processing mechanism in language production subsystem. This study is about Language Production Ability of Children Aged 6. There are two problems to be solved in this study: (1) How is the ability of language production for children aged 6 in Institute of Play International School Makassar? (2) What are the language disorders of children aged 6 in Institute of Play International School Makassar in producing language? The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive method and psycholinguistics approach. This research involved four children. Technique analysis used in this research is syntactical and phonological analysis. This technique is used to analyze the sentence utterance by children aged 6 in Institute of Play International School Makassar.  Based on findings, The children aged 4 in Institute of Play International School Makassar are able to speak with good structure of sentence and able to pronounce the words correctly.

Abstract

This study focuses on prosodic patterns, specifically intonation and stress, in student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during riddle game situations. The main objective of this research is to identify and analyze how ADHD and other factors influence prosodic patterns in English speech as a second language in a gaming context. The data source comes from an 11-year-old ADHD student with the initials D, who studies at Corner Stone School in Makassar. Data collection was conducted using an observation technique. Observations were carried out while playing a riddle game, with audio recordings used for analysis. The results indicate a tendency to emphasize the beginning of utterances, such as the words "Faster," "Help," and "Yes," which function as signals for the listener to focus on the core message. Additionally, the intonation pattern showed a tendency to use falling intonation, characterized by a high pitch at the beginning of the utterance and a lower pitch at the end. Interestingly, the prosodic patterns produced by the ADHD student in this study were not significantly different from those of non-ADHD students. This research suggests that although students with ADHD face challenges in attention and impulse control, the subject in this study could still adjust their prosodic patterns to convey messages effectively in specific contexts, such as in a riddle game setting.

Abstract

This study aims to measure and explain the differences in preferences between males and females in using distance and time units when responding to questions related to the measurement of physical space. The main objective of this research is to assess the extent to which males and females respond to distance using either distance or time units, as well as to explain the reasons behind their answers based on gender. This research has significant implications for spatial planning, particularly in creating more inclusive and gender-responsive environmental designs that account for gender-based perceptions of physical space. The method used in this study is a descriptive approach, with a questionnaire as the research instrument. The results are presented as the percentage of respondent answers, which are analyzed and explained using Kurt Lewin's Frame of Reference theory. Thus, preferences for using distance and time units based on gender can be better understood. The results show that males are more likely to use distance units in their responses, with 64.3% choosing this option, compared to females at 35.7%. On the other hand, 34.2% of males chose time units, whereas 65.8% of females did so. Males prefer distance units, such as kilometers or meters, because they find these measurements more concrete and measurable, often linked to their educational background and experiences that require precision in distance measurements. In contrast, females tend to choose time units, considering factors such as traffic complexity and the uncertainty of travel time in large cities. The updates in this study not only addresses how individuals use time and distance units in cognitive mapping or gender differences in spatial understanding, but also focuses on its application, emphasizing how the presentation of distance and time information can be optimized to improve accessibility and mobility in transportation systems. The research reveals gender differences in the use of distance and time units, which have implications for the design of more inclusive urban infrastructure. This understanding allows urban planners to create gender-responsive transportation systems and public spaces. The findings promote policies that are more equitable and support equal access to public facilities. Keywords: Preferences, Distance, Time, Planning, Reference

Abstract

This study investigates the use of discourse markers (DMs) in male and female students’ speech, focusing on their frequency, function, and gender-based variation. It explores how DMs support coherence and fluency in spoken discourse within an educational context. Through a sociolinguistic lens, the study identifies patterns of DM usage and potential linguistic differences between genders in spontaneous speech. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to transcribe and analyse audio-recorded student conversations. Discourse analysis was used to classify the types and functions of DMs. Findings show that both male and female students used DMs to structure discourse, manage turn-taking, and signal speaker stance. However, female students tended to use a wider range of DMs, particularly those expressing agreement, politeness, and elaboration. In contrast, male students more frequently used DMs associated with hesitation and topic shifts. These results underscore the influence of sociolinguistic factors in DM selection and highlight how gender can shape spoken language patterns. Keywords:     sociolinguistic, discourse markers, spoken discourse, student speech
