Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effects of coconut coir ash and urea on the growth of oil palm seedlings in a pre-nursery setting utilizing peat media. Conducted at the experimental farm of the Faculty of Agriculture at Riau Islamic University, located at Jalan Kaharuddin Nasution KM 11 No. 113, Air Winter Village, Bukit Raya District, Pekanbaru City, the research spanned from November 2022 to February 2023. A factorial completely randomized design (CRD) was employed, featuring two variables: the dosage of coconut fiber ash (0, 7.037, 14.075, and 21.113 g per polybag) and the dosage of urea fertilizer (0, 0.105, 0.210, and 0.315 g per polybag). This setup resulted in 48 experimental units, comprised of 16 treatment combinations, each replicated three times. The parameters evaluated included pH of the peat, plant height, number of fronds per plant, tuber diameter, wet weight, dry weight, and root volume. Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data, followed by a 5% Bonferroni-adjusted multiple comparisons test. Findings from the study revealed that the combination of coconut fiber ash and urea did not significantly affect any characteristics of the oil palm seedlings. However, coconut fiber ash emerged as a significant factor for all measured parameters, with the optimal treatment identified at a rate of 21.113 g per polybag. Similarly, urea demonstrated significance across all evaluated parameters, with the most effective dosage being 0.315 g per polybag.

Abstract

This study investigates the combined effects of Eco-Enzyme and Rice Husk Biochar on the growth of Clove Plant Seedlings (Syzygium aromaticum L.) in red and yellow podsolic media. Conducted at the experimental farm of the Faculty of Agriculture at the Islamic University of Riau, the research spanned four months, from January to April 2024. The study employed a Factorial Complete Random Design (RAL) with two factors: the application of Eco-Enzyme (factor Z) at five levels—0 ml, 10 ml/l water, 20 ml/l water, 30 ml/l water, and 40 ml/l water—and Rice Husk Biochar (factor B) at four levels—0 g, 100 g/polybag, 200 g/polybag, and 300 g/polybag. The parameters observed included plant height, leaf count, chlorophyll content, stomatal number, stem base diameter, longest root length, root volume, crown fresh weight, and root-to-crown ratio. The results indicated that the interaction between Eco-Enzyme and Rice Husk Biochar significantly influenced plant height, leaf count, chlorophyll levels, stomatal numbers, stem base diameter, root length, crown fresh weight, and the root-to-crown ratio. The best treatment was identified as an Eco-Enzyme concentration of 40 ml/l water combined with 300 g of rice husk biochar per polybag (Z4B3). Eco-Enzyme had a significant main effect on all parameters, with the optimal treatment being 40 ml/l water. Similarly, Rice Husk Biochar also had a significant main effect on all observed parameters, with the best treatment being 300 g/polybag.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the main and interaction effects of Coconut Shell Biochar and Cow Manure on the growth and production of cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.) on red and yellow podzolic soil. The research was conducted at the Cold Water Experimental Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Riau Islamic University, Pekanbaru City, for 3 months, from May to July 2023. This research used a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two factors. The first factor is Coconut Shell Biochar (B), which consists of 5 levels, namely 0, 830, 1,660, 2,500, and 3,330 g/plot, and the second factor is Cow Manure (S), consisting of 4 levels, namely 0, 500, 1,000, and 1,500 g/plot, to obtain 20 treatment combinations with 3 replications, so there are 60 experimental units. The parameters observed were flowering age, male-to-female flower ratio, harvest age, number of fruit per plant, fruit weight per plant, fruit weight per fruit, and fruit length per fruit. The observation data were analyzed statistically, and the BNJ test was performed at the 5% level. The research results showed that the interaction between Coconut Shell Biochar and Cow Manure had a significant effect on the parameters of harvest age, male-to-female flower ratio, fruit weight per plant, fruit weight per fruit, and fruit length per fruit. The best combination was Coconut Shell Biochar at a dose of 3,330 g/plot and Cow Manure at a dose of 1,500 g/plot. The main effects of Coconut Shell Biochar and Cow Manure were significant on all observed parameters. The best treatment is Coconut Shell Biochar at a dose of 3,330 g/plot and Cow Manure at a dose of 1,500 g/plot.

Abstract

Ultisol soils are characterized by low pH and very low contents of organic matter and essential nutrients (N, P, and K), thus requiring amelioration to support shallot cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction effects and main effects of various organic fertilizers and NPK 16:16:16 fertilizer rates on the growth and yield of shallots grown on Ultimo soil. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Universitas Islam Riau from December 2023 to March 2024 using a factorial Completely Randomized Design with three replications. The first factor was the type of organic fertilizer, consisting of kenaf leaf compost, oil palm empty fruit bunch compost (EFB/KKS), cattle manure, and poultry manure, each applied at 2 kg plot⁻¹. The second factor was the rate of NPK 16:16:16 fertilizer, namely 0, 30, 45, and 60 g plot⁻¹. Observed variables included vegetative growth, yield components, and changes in soil pH. The results showed a significant interaction between organic fertilizer type and NPK rate on all growth and yield parameters. The best treatment combination was EFB compost at 2 kg plot⁻¹ combined with NPK 16:16:16 at 60 g plot⁻¹ (P2N3). Individually, EFB compost and the 60 g plot⁻¹ NPK rate also produced the best main effects. Finally, the combined application of EFB compost and NPK 16:16:16 significantly improved soil pH, vegetative growth, and shallot yield on Ultimo soil and is recommended for shallot cultivation on similar marginal lands.
