Abstract

J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series has captivated millions of readers worldwide, particularly through the multifaceted character of Harry Potter himself. This research employs critical discourse analysis to examine how Rowling utilizes language and narrative techniques to depict and develop Harry's character across the seven-book series. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from narrative theory and discourse analysis, the study explores Harry's evolution from a vulnerable orphan to a courageous leader, analyzing both micro-level linguistic features and macro-level narrative structures. By examining themes of identity, morality, and heroism as portrayed through Harry's interactions and internal monologues, this research illuminates the nuanced strategies through which Rowling shapes Harry Potter's persona and resonates with young adult audiences. This analysis contributes to literary studies by elucidating the intricate relationship between language, character development, and reader engagement in young adult literature.

Abstract

This study examines the interplay between sex, politeness, and stereotypes in Enola Holmes (2020) and Enola Holmes 2 (2022), focusing on Enola's interactions with Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Using Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory and Butler’s (1990) gender performativity framework, the research analyzes how Enola employs politeness and directness to navigate social expectations. The findings reveal that Enola challenges traditional gender stereotypes by using assertive language with Sherlock, countering the idea that women are inherently indirect and deferential. Her polite exchanges with Mycroft, meanwhile, demonstrate that politeness can function as resistance, not just submission. This analysis highlights the adaptability of gendered communication, where politeness and assertiveness are used contextually rather than being tied to sex. Ultimately, the research shows how media like Enola Holmes both reflects and challenges societal expectations about gendered communication, offering a more nuanced view of language, gender, and power.

Abstract

This research investigates the use of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) politeness strategies in email templates for secretaries within the MailSuite platform. Through qualitative analysis, key techniques identified include the Meta-Model, Milton Model, reframing, pacing and leading, anchoring, rapport building, and outcome-oriented strategies. Findings reveal that Building Rapport, Pacing and leading and Outcome-Oriented Techniques are the most dominant, present in 100% of templates. While some templates effectively utilize these strategies, others lack the subtlety needed for professionalism. This study emphasizes the importance of enhancing email communication through NLP techniques to foster more respectful and effective professional interactions.
