Abstract

Background: The strategic response of nurses in addressing health inequities in marginal sectors led to the conduct of a health leadership governance training program for local chief executives. Objective: This study aimed to explore and provide a description of the experiences of local chief executives (LCEs) or mayors who participated in the nurse-initiated health training named Municipal Leadership and Governance Program (MLGP). Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used through key informant interviews of fifteen mayors or local chief executives (LCE) in the provinces of Bohol and Negros Oriental, Philippines. Data were collected from 16 to 20 November 2022 and analyzed using a thematic approach. Results: The findings generated six themes: a) Leadership capacitation promoting transformative experience, b) Pandemic and program-induced limitations in the training implementation, c) Personal leadership motivation, d) Experiential learning promoting learning as applied in real-world situations, e) Celebrating leadership transformation, and f) 3R’s of MLGP: revisit, review, recommend. Conclusion: The realizations of the training participants provided valuable implications for the quality of training offered by nurse leaders who advocated the MLGP implementation. It served as a proactive and responsive approach to the health leadership capacitation of mayors. It guided them in their personal realizations that inspired them to apply what they had learned and enabled them to effect experiences of personal to institutional transformation.

Abstract

Introduction: Empathy is the ability of a nurse to understand the circumstances, experiences, and feelings of the patients. It is a vital component of a nurse as this enables the nurse to respond therapeutically to the needs of the clients, thereby providing quality nursing care. This study explored the development of empathy among nursing students based on their hospital exposure and other factors that provide a more in-depth understanding of the phenomenon investigated. Methods: Using the intrinsic case study method, the study interviewed six nursing students as informants, selected based on their extent of clinical exposure through purposive sampling. A standardized Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE) was also used to provide information on empathy. A cross-case analysis was used to generate the findings of this study. Results: Findings generated five themes: maintaining empathy level across different conditions, prior clinical experiences affect empathy levels, empathy increases with knowledge, expression of empathy is hindered by academic workload and mismatch between perceived and objectively measured empathy levels. Conclusions: Empathy was more developed by nursing students when they were exposed to patient care experiences. The extent of knowledge and the continued experience in the clinical field are major factors that contribute to their increased empathy levels of nursing students.

Abstract

Teaching internship is a crucial component of teacher education to prepare student teachers for their future careers in education. This study developed and validated an instrument to measure and evaluate the performance of cooperating teachers in mentoring student teachers. Items capturing the concept of teacher mentoring were developed through literature review, interviews, and focus group discussions. The 110-item 5-point Likert scale was given to 265 randomly selected student teachers from higher education institutions in the Philippines. Validity and reliability of the cooperating teacher mentoring scale (CTMS) were tested using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and reliability analyses. Moreover, EFA showed three-factor structure of the instrument regarding the CTMS. The study reported the average variance extracted (AVE), composite reliability, and Cronbach alpha coefficients. These findings confirmed that the extracted constructs possess convergent validity and meet the necessary requirements. The item remained in the factor loadings of less than 0.50 (instructional support and professional development: 20 items; supportive teaching and mentorship: 15 items; and effective mentoring and coaching: 15 items). This study has confirmed three-factor structure of the CTMS. Researchers, educators, administrators, and student teachers can use the CTMS to evaluate cooperating teachers’ mentoring skills and provide feedback on areas that need improvement.
