Abstract

The Surabaya City Government successfully curtailed prostitution activities by closing down red-light districts such as Dupak Bangunsari/Kremil and Dolly. However, these closures have left several issues for former sex workers still residing in these areas. In this context, Muhammadiyah Surabaya plays a key role in the guidance and empowerment of former sex workers. This research reveals the community preaching strategies of Muhammadiyah, including enhancing faith, providing entrepreneurial skills, intensive preaching in areas still practicing prostitution, micro-economic development, health counseling for those affected by sexually transmitted diseases, repurposing former prostitution locations, and psychological support through counseling. These strategies aim to provide sustained reinforcement and guidance to former sex workers, addressing their vulnerable and weakened psychological, sociological, and economic conditions post-closure. A qualitative approach is employed in this research through observation, interviews, and literature review. The research findings indicate Muhammadiyah's success in providing holistic support to former sex workers, imparting skills and knowledge, and assisting them in developing micro-economies to enhance their well-being. Abstract

One of the urban problems is poverty, as is the case in Surabaya, which had a poverty rate of 136.37 thousand people in 2023. This poverty rate is the result of the Surabaya city government's intervention through various poverty alleviation programs. Previously, the poverty rate in Surabaya was 138.21 thousand people in March 2022, which decreased to 136.37 thousand people in March 2023. The success of the Surabaya city government in reducing poverty raises the question of whether this reduction in poverty is purely due to government intervention through its programs, or if there is also a role played by social institutions, specifically LAZIS Muhammadiyah Surabaya, which has poverty alleviation programs similar to those implemented by the Surabaya government. This research uses a qualitative research method with an empirical approach. In this study, it was found that LAZISMU (Lembaga Zakat Infak dan Shadaqah Muhammadiyah) Surabaya focuses on helping the poor residents of Surabaya to alleviate their burdens through at least six main programs, namely: education, health, social-humanitarian, economy, environment, and dakwah (Islamic preaching). These programs are almost identical to those carried out by the Surabaya government in its poverty alleviation interventions. Our research found that the social philanthropy programs conducted by LAZISMU Surabaya contributed to the reduction of poverty in Surabaya. Keywords: Poverty, Philanthropy, LAZISMU

Abstract

The 2019 Presidential Election in Indonesia was considered highly tense and had the potential to trigger conflicts among fellow countrymen. The argumentation involves two crucial aspects. Firstly, with only two pairs of candidates, namely Jokowi-Ma'ruf Amin and Prabowo-Sandiaga Uno, it led to a division among Indonesian voters due to the lack of alternative choices. Secondly, religious identity politics played a strong role in the 2019 Presidential Election campaign, deemed capable of threatening national unity. This paper analyzes the practice of identity politics in the 2019 Presidential Election using identity theory. The research highlights the social history of Islam and the politics of identity developed by Islamic political parties in the Paciran Sub-district, Lamongan. Additionally, the study also explores the political identity contestation within Islamic political parties in competing for Muslim voters in the sub-district. The results indicate that a long history of identity struggles has occurred in Paciran Village, and this ongoing contest is produced by community agents and structures to win candidates through arguments of shared identity, facilitating voter mobilization on behalf of the same identity.
