Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the problem-based learning model can significantly influence the ability to write recount texts in grade 8 of Methodist-9 Medan Junior High School. This study used pre-experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. This research design only looks at students' abilities before and after using a problem-based learning model. The sample of this research was 30 students of grade 8 of SMP Methodist-9 Medan. The data collection technique was conducted by writing test. The result of this study showed that there is an effect of problem-based learning model on the ability of grade 8 students in writing recount text at SMP Methodist-9 Medan. This is proved from the higher average score of students after using the problem-based learning model. The data in this study were also normally distributed. Based on data analysis by using t-test, it was found that Tcount was 16,50, at 5% significant level, dk(n-1)= 30-1=29, so Ttable =1,70. It can be concluded that Tcount >Ttable (16,50 > 1,70). It means that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. It’s means that the Problem-Based Learning Model significantly affects the eighth grade students’ ability in writing recount text at SMP Methodist-9 Medan.

Abstract

This research investigates the use of illocutionary speech acts in Prabowo Subianto’s speech at the United Nations, aiming to identify the types of illocutionary acts and their functions in political discourse. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in pragmatic theory, focusing on the classification of speech acts based on Searle’s framework: representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The data were collected from the speech transcript and analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that representative acts dominate the speech 50%, indicating the speaker’s emphasis on conveying facts, beliefs, and social or humanitarian realities. Directive acts account for approximately 23,08%, reflecting efforts to persuade and motivate the audience to take collective action. Commissive acts represent 19,23% of the utterances, demonstrating commitments and promises, particularly concerning Indonesia’s contributions to global peacekeeping and international development. Expressive acts make up around 7,69%, showing emotional engagement and moral concern, while declarative acts are absent, suggesting a focus on persuasion and ethical appeal rather than formal institutional action. The study concludes that Prabowo Subianto’s speech effectively combines informative, persuasive, and ethical strategies, with a strong emphasis on representative and directive illocutionary acts to inform, inspire, and mobilize the international audience. This research contributes to the understanding of pragmatic functions in political discourse and provides insights for speakers, educators, and researchers in applying illocutionary theory to real-world communication. In conclusion, the dominance of representative acts, supported by directive and commissive acts, demonstrates that Prabowo Subianto’s speech functions mainly as a diplomatic and persuasive political discourse aimed at informing, influencing, and fostering international cooperation. This study contributes to the field of pragmatics by providing insight into the use of illocutionary speech acts in political speeches delivered at international forums.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a crucial component of English language learning; however, conventional vocabulary instruction often promotes passive learning and limited student engagement. Preliminary observations revealed that students demonstrated relatively low vocabulary mastery, indicating the need for more interactive digital learning tools. This study, therefore, aimed to examine the effect of the Wayground application on improving tenth-grade students’ vocabulary mastery and to compare the learning outcomes of students taught using Wayground with those instructed through conventional methods through a quantitative experimental approach employing a non-equivalent control group design involving two tenth-grade classes consisting of 60 students, using a 20-item multiple-choice vocabulary test administered through pre-test and post-test procedures. The findings revealed that although both groups experienced improvement, the experimental group demonstrated substantially greater progress, with the mean score increasing from 47 to 76 compared to the control group, which improved only from 48 to 51, while the Independent Samples t-test produced a value of 9.35 that exceeded the t-table value of 2.00 at the 0.05 significance level. These results indicate that the Wayground application significantly enhances students’ English vocabulary mastery and represents an effective digital learning tool for supporting vocabulary development in English language instruction.
