Abstract

This study investigates how The Study Quran, a commentary led by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, represents religious literacy within the framework of religious and cultural diversity. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research examines this commentary to delineate the concept of religious literacy and illustrates how this concept is manifested in the commentary's interpretation. The findings reveal that "The Study Quran" aims to foster an inclusive discourse by eschewing terminology that could incite sectarian conflict and emphasizing a universal understanding of submission to God. The commentary underscores the significance of interfaith dialogue and diversity while deliberately avoiding extremist interpretations, instead advocating for moderation and justice across various religions. By utilizing a thorough hermeneutical approach and offering a comprehensive understanding of the Quranic teachings, "The Study Quran" emerges as a crucial instrument in promoting peaceful coexistence and mitigating religiously motivated conflicts in multicultural contexts.

Abstract

This study comparatively analyses the direction of Islamic economic policy in Indonesia during the Reform era (1998-2024) through the framework of Maqashid al-Shari’ah. Using a qualitative literature study method with a deductive content analysis approach, this research maps the policy evolution across five presidential administrations: B.J. Habibie, Abdurrahman Wahid, Megawati Soekarnoputri, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and Joko Widodo. The findings reveal a progressive policy trajectory, shifting from a focus on fulfilling essential needs (dharuriyyat) in the early Reform era, such as establishing the legal framework for Islamic banking, to fulfilling secondary needs (hajiyyat) through institutional strengthening and comprehensive legislation, and ultimately reaching the complementary level (tahsiniyyat) with a focus on ecosystem integration, industry consolidation, and global innovations like Green Sukuk. The analysis indicates the dominance of the pillars of preserving wealth (hifz al-mal) and religion (hifz al-din), while also highlighting challenges in translating the substance of Maqashid to the operational level. The contribution of this research is to provide a Maqashid-based policy analysis model and recommendations for aligning future policies to be more holistic.

Abstract

The global phenomenon of mukbang (eating broadcasts), characterized by the demonstrative consumption of excessive food portions, has become a profitable digital entertainment industry. However, this practice presents a deep ethical dilemma when viewed through the lens of Islamic consumption ethics, which strongly prohibit excessive behavior (israf) and waste (tabdzir). This study aims to analyze the fundamental principles of consumption ethics in Islam (halal, thayyib, and moderation) and to critically evaluate the practice of mukbang content within this ethical framework. Furthermore, it seeks to understand the impact of the mukbang phenomenon on the consumption behavior of its audience. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method using content analysis and library research. Data was collected from existing literature, scholarly articles on Islamic ethics, and case studies of popular mukbang content on social media platforms like YouTube. The analysis reveals a fundamental conflict between mukbang practices and Islamic principles. Mukbang inherently constitutes an act of israf’(excessiveness), directly contradicting Q.S. Al-A’raf: 31. It also raises concerns regarding the thayyib (goodness) principle, as it promotes consumption patterns detrimental to health, thus conflicting with the objective of hifdz al-nafs (preservation of life). Mukbang, while profitable as entertainment, normalizes gluttony and consumerism, potentially leading to negative societal and health impacts. This study concludes that the potential harm (mafsadah) of this phenomenon outweighs its claimed benefits (maslahah). It suggests a need for ethical guidelines for content creators and consumers in the digital age.
