Abstract

This study is driven by the variations in the chronological arrangement of the Qur'an among different nuzūlī tafsirs, reflecting the reasoning systems of interpreters in engaging with the turaṡ tradition. The aim of this research is to explore how geographical contexts shape the reasoning and awareness of mufasirs regarding the discourse on Qur'anic historicity. Utilizing a literature review method, the study examines five nuzūlī tafsirs as primary sources, complemented by relevant secondary research. Foucault's theoretical framework and comparative media analysis are employed to investigate the interactions among nuzūlī tafsirs concerning the Qur'an's chronological arrangement, aiming to uncover the underlying factors behind these differences. The findings reveal that historical awareness and the concept of tartīb al-nuzūl in the modern era have led interpreters to reexamine the chronological debates of the Qur'an. Interpreters from the Arab-Syrian context tend to adopt the turaṡ reasoning system to uphold Islamic identity within the global intellectual landscape, while Al-Jābirī, drawing from the French philosophical tradition, critiques this historical reliance through a deconstructive lens. This epistemic confrontation indicates that discussions on the Qur'an's chronological arrangement remain pertinent for reconstruction, with geographical knowledge significantly influencing the diverse reasoning of interpreters.

Abstract

Denial is implicitly alluded to in Q.S. al-Anbiya [21]: 87 which tells the story of the escape of Prophet Yunus from the conditions of his people. This study aims to identify the denial attitude contained in the verse, based on the argument that the Qur'anic text has implicit meanings that are relevant to the current context. The method applied in this research is descriptive-analytical by using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach to analyze the significance of the meaning of the Qur'anic text. The approach analyzes denotative and connotative meanings to bring out the mythology contained in the story of Prophet Yunus. This paper asks two questions: first, how is Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis of Q.S. al-Anbiya' [21]: 87? Second, how does the concept of denial reflect on the storyline of Prophet Yunus? This article concludes that denotatively Q.S. al-Anbiya' [21]: 87 shows the attitude of Prophet Yunus who left his people in a state of anger and prejudice against Allah SWT. The statement is in line with the concept of denial, which connotes the psychological condition of Prophet Yunus who was filled with feelings of disappointment with reality. He decided to deny by abandoning the responsibility given by Allah as a form of self-defense and protest against reality. The wisdom contained in Q.S. al-Anbiya' [21]: 87 is the prohibition of Allah Swt to His servants to be denial in dealing with problems and responsibilities.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the true meaning (maqāṣid) of Qur’anic verses frequently misinterpreted as endorsing violence and terrorism, particularly those pertaining to war (qitāl) and jihad, including QS. al-Baqarah [2]:190–193 and 216, QS. an-Nisā’ [4]:75, QS. al-Mā’idah [5]:33 and 64, QS. al-Anfāl [8]:39 and 57, QS. at-Tawbah [9]:5, 13, 29, and 36, and QS. al-Ḥajj [22]:39 and 78. Misapprehensions regarding the contextual background of these verses have contributed to radical ideologies that justify violence under the guise of religion. This research endeavors to construct a counter-narrative through the tafsīr maqāṣidī approach, aiming to restore the Qur’an’s universal message of mercy and justice. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study utilizes the tafsīr maqāṣidī framework through four analytical stages: First, consideration of all aspects of public interest (maṣlaḥah), second, thematic organization of the verses, third, semantic and historical analysis, and fourth, contextualization of interpretations within contemporary intellectual and social dynamics. The findings indicate that the terrorists’ misinterpretations of Qur’anic verses are fundamentally at odds with the maqāṣid al-Qur’an, which prioritizes human welfare and compassion. The tafsīr maqāṣidī approach reveals that the Qur’anic injunctions concerning war are defensive, aimed at upholding justice and resisting oppression rather than initiating aggression. The authentic vision and mission of Islam, as demonstrated, is to extend mercy to all creation, irrespective of race, ethnicity, or nationality. This study contributes to the discourse on deradicalization by asserting that efforts should extend beyond correcting religious interpretations to include cross-sectoral education encompassing social, political, economic, and media domains to achieve sustainable peace.
