Abstract

When an individual socializes with other individuals, sometimes he only cares about himself. However, some individuals prioritize other people and are even willing to sacrifice themselves, when socializing with other individuals. This research aims to analyze altruism in the novel Hati Suhita by Khilma Anis using the structuration theory initiated by Anthony Giddens. In this research, researchers used qualitative descriptive methods. In collecting data, the researcher read the novel Hati Suhita carefully, then the researcher determined the actions and awareness of the agents (characters) in the novel. Next, the researcher analyzed the data that had been collected by identifying the discursive awareness, practical awareness, and unconscious motivation of the characters in the novel. After that, the researcher compared the results of this research with the results of other research which analyzed a novel using Anthony Giddens structuration theory. Then, the researcher draws conclusions based on the data that has been collected and analyzed by the researcher. The results of this research show that the altruism in the novel Hati Suhita is depicted by agents through their actions. Their actions are based on three consciousnesses, namely discursive, practical, and unconscious motivation. The results of this research also show that the structure of the novel Hati Suhita greatly influences the agent. However, the agent in the novel Hati Suhita is unable to influence the existing structure.

Abstract

The alienation experienced by a person is often underestimated. Anyone can experience alienation depending on their personality and living conditions. This research aims: (1) to determine the form of alienation of the character "I" in the novel "Mausim al-Hijrah ila as-Syamal"; and (2) to determine the form of alienation of the character "Mustafa Said" in the novel "Mausim al-Hijrah ila as-Syamal". Researchers use a qualitative descriptive approach as a type of research and library research as a type of research. The data source in this research is the novel "Mausim Al-Hijrah ila As-Syamal" by Tayeb Salih, published in 1966. The data collection techniques in this research used reading, translation and note-taking techniques. Meanwhile, data analysis techniques are carried out by reducing data, displaying data, comparing the data/results of this research with data/results of other research, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research are: (1) the form of alienation of the character "I" in the novel "Mausim al-Hijrah ila as-Syamal", namely despair/feeling hopeless and wanting to die; and (2) the form of alienation of the character "Mustafa Said" in the novel "Mausim al-Hijrah ila as-Syamal", namely that he rarely socializes and has a private/secret space. Humans who experience alienation have various causes and symptoms, depending on the person's personality and living conditions. Then, the causes and symptoms experienced by humans produce various forms of alienation.

Abstract

The capitalist system implemented in an area will inevitably give rise to conflict and social alienation as well as bad influences that can be felt by society. The study of Marxism was born as a form of criticism of the capitalist system and a solution to the problems caused by capitalism, namely social conflict and alienation. The aims of this research is to reveal the impact of conflict and proletariat alienation on Sudanese society. This research uses qualitative research methods, with a Marxist literary sociology approach. There are two data sources, namely primary data sources and secondary data sources. Data collection was carried out through reading techniques and note-taking techniques. In analyzing the data, researchers used the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana analysis model in which there are three stages, namely data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this research is the effects arising from the conflict and alienation experienced by proletariat towards Sudanese society in the novel "Al-Junqu Masamirul Ardh" are very bad, including hoping for the bourgeoisie, enduring suffering, carrying out resistance or revolution, and being trapped in hopeless despair. where the bourgeoisie greatly benefits, while the proletariat (workers) suffers greatly.

Abstract

Abstract. Fillmore is modern linguistic figure who pioneered the emergence of case grammar theory. He stated that case grammar is a new version of the theory modified from the old theory, namely generative transformation grammar. He developed case grammar after seeing a problem with the grammar of generative transformations. Thus, he declared that case grammar consists of two basic components: modality and proposition. In a line with this background, the purposes of this study are: (1) to reveal the modality in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore; (2) to reveal the preposition in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore. The type of this study is qualitative descriptive study. Data is in the form of conversation in the film. Thus, the data were taken through watching, listening, and note-taking techniques. The data was analyzed by using three steps. They are data reduction: researchers classified data based on elements of case grammar theory including modalities and propositions, data presentation: researchers displayed data in the form of the table in accordance of modalities and propositions, and interpreted data based on case grammar theory, and conclusion: researchers conducted data induction from interpretation results and ensured that the interpretation results fulfilled the elements of case grammar theory. The results show that the modality in the film “Enola Holmes” based on the perspective of Charles J. Fillmore consists of three modalities. They are tense modality, adverb modality, and negation modality. At the same time, the proposition consists of ten types. They are agentive case (A), experiential case (E), instrument case (I), objective case (O), source case (S), goal case (G), locative case (L), time case (T), companion case (CMP), and benefactive case (B). The results of this study strengthen Fillmore’s theory which states that as a part of sentence structures, modalities and propositions have types and forms and in the context of English film dialogue, the emergence of modalities and propositions is influenced by sentence structure used by the speaker in conveying his meaning. Keywords: Case Grammar, Film, Modality, Proposition
