Abstract

The buwuhan tradition has for hundreds of years been a means of social cohesion in rural communities. In social relations, buwuhan can be conceived of as economic negotiations using an exchange approach. As a subculture, buwuhan becomes a strategic tool in marking the stages of one’s life, which is held at weddings and circumcisions. In rural communities this economic exchange is organized through record keeping. Awareness of social norms of negligence requires that the exchange value be paid back at a minimum. In the modern era, the buwuhan tradition experiences a value shift, making the buwuhan tradition a means of taking personal advantage, which is wrapped in the values of solidarity and harmony. Especially in urban communities and societies undergoing social transformation such as sub-urban communities. This is because modernization has changed the way people look at the value of money. This meaning has further led to the occurrence of abusive practices that have been implemented improperly, forced, exploited, with modes and strategies for material gain. To preserve the value of the buwuhan tradition, there must be a social reconstruction that returns the meaning of this tradition into its function as a social cohesion that can be accepted by the norms of modern society, which are more rational, realistic, interactive, familiar, and harmonious.

Abstract

The practice of gender equality in religious settings is often the subject of controversy and debate. This article examines the social construction of gender equality practices implemented in Wahidiyah, an Islamic religious institution that includes Shalawat Wahidiyyah, Islamic Boarding Schools, and Islamic Education Institutions, from kindergarten to university level. This study uses a sociological approach and Social Construction theory analysis to understand how the practice of gender equality in Wahidiyah is realized and understood by its congregation. Through qualitative data collection involving interviews, observations, and analysis of relevant documents, this study analyzed various aspects of social construction involved in the practice of gender equality in Wahidiyah. The results show that the practice of gender equality in Wahidiyah is a social reality that is deliberately built to dynamise the organization. The selection of leadership figures in institutions under Wahidiyah is based on individual qualifications and competencies regardless of gender. This social construction is seen by the congregation as a vehicle for healthy competition, where every congregation who has the qualifications and competencies in accordance with the needs of the organization has the opportunity to become part of the leadership. However, it is important to note that this pattern was not based on open elections. Instead, these individuals are appointed by the Muallif, taking into account loyalty, ability, and relevant educational qualifications. The practice of gender equality in Wahidiyah, in this way, reflects the existence of social constructs that lead to the building of a dynamic and inclusive organization. This article contributes to broadening our understanding of the practice of gender equality among Muslims, particularly in the Pesantren context. By focusing on aspects of social construction, this article presents a more comprehensive perspective on how the practice of gender equality in Wahidiyah is implemented and interpreted through its congregation.

Abstract

Wahidiyyah, which is centered in Kediri in the form of a sholawat tariqat, faces external and internal challenges. This study focuses on the Wahidiyyah elite's understanding of external-internal conflict, organizational legalization, and the socio-political values of organizational transformation amid the controversy surrounding its movement. The study used a sociological approach with the analysis of Burger and Luckman's Social Construction theory, which found that in the externalization space, conflict is understood as part of social dynamics.  In the Objectivation space, legalization is the socio-political power of Wahidiyah in the midst of the current debate on society.  With the issuance of the decree from the Attorney General's Office, Wahidiyah was placed in line with other Islamic religious organizations. In the Internalization Space, Wahidiyyah's socio-political values of transformation are openness, nationalism, democracy, and inclusivity.  The transformation of the institution from Tarekat to Shalawat wahidiyyah as a religious organization does not change the religious orientation of wahidiyyah nor does it change its teachings and practices.  The belief and enthusiasm of the congregation remain the same, as the opening of management representatives abroad is proof that wahidiyyah is loved by the congregation.
