Abstract

This paper presents a historical overview of the dynamics of inter-religious relations in South Kalimantan. Early conversion to Islam in the 16th century, and more intensive Islamization by the 18th century, can be seen as the formative period of Islam in this region. The encounter and clash between the new religion and the existing beliefs and practices were unavoidable. By the late 19th century, the clash seems to move to another target, namely the colonial power associated with Christianity. By this period, Islam was transformed from the court into a people movement against the colonial power. By the first half of the 20th century, the problem of the 18th century apparently reappeared but in another form, namely the clash between puritan and traditional Islam. The making of the Indonesian nation state by the second half of the 20th century pushed the Banjarese Muslims to be involved in the ideological debates, and even in a rebellion against the state. During the Soeharto period, Muslim-Christian tensions at the national politics also influenced this region. Finally, in the Reformation Era, the Muslims in the province face serious challenges of intra- and inter-religious plurality.

Abstract

This paper discusses the discourses of Indonesian Muslim intellectuals on the works of Ali Shariati and Hassan Hanafi in Indonesia’s New Order. The literature discussed here consists primarily of the articles written by prominent Indonesian Muslim intellectuals, and most of the articles were introductions to the translated books of Shariati and Hanafi. The articles shows us that Shariati’s and Hanafi’s ideas were received, interpreted, criticized, and appropriated by the intellectuals in order to make them relevant to the Indonesian context. The idealization of Shariati as an intellectual, a more open attitude towards Shi’ism, and the discussion of his socialist tendencies could not be separated from the demands of the Indonesian political situation during the New Order. Likewise, Hanafi’s ideas on the relation between religion, ideology and development, and the Islamic Left and Occidentalism found their relevance to the Indonesian socio-political context. Therefore, the discourses are elements of the New Order’s Islamic discourses.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v25i2.7181

Abstract

This article analyzes the works of Dutch scholars Karel A. Steenbrink and Martin van Bruinessen, focusing on their research on Islam in Indonesia, particularly regarding the Banjarese ethnic group. Steenbrink examines Banjarese historical figures from the 18th and 19th centuries, while van Bruinessen extends the analysis to include figures from the 20th century and explores Sufi order movements such as the Sammaniya and Naqshabandiyah Orders, as well as heterodox groups. The article evaluates how these scholars presented and analyzed the roles of Muslim Banjarese figures in society through their writings and personal communications. The analysis generated both positive and negative responses from other scholars, indicating the impact and recognition of their work. Despite the Banjarese Muslims being a small part of their broader research on Islam in Indonesia, their contributions are well-regarded among scholars in the field.
