Abstract

Ahad hadith is one of the sources of Islamic law whose validity and hujjiyyah are still debated among scholars. One of the schools of thought that pays great attention to this issue is the Ahnaf school, whose scholars employ a critical method of confirming the hujjiyyah of Ahad hadith through its conformity with the Quran. This study aims to examine in depth the theories and principles of the ahnaf jurists in assessing the validity of Ahad hadith to obtain a comprehensive understanding of their epistemological basis and its implications for the acceptance of hadith as a source of Islamic law. This study uses a qualitative method with a content analysis approach, analyzing various primary and secondary sources such as books, scientific journals, and classical works relevant to the topic. The results show that, according to the Ahnaf jurists, Ahad hadith must first be tested against the Quran as the ultimate standard of truth. If its content contradicts the apparent meaning of the Quran, the hadith cannot be used as evidence, as it is considered to have been misreported (ziy?fah) and is categorized as a munqati‘ma‘naw? hadith. The Ahnaf scholars emphasize that the Quran is qat‘? because its transmission is mutawatir, while Ahad hadith is zann?, and therefore cannot be used to takhsis, taqy?d, or naskh verses of the Quran. Based on this principle, the Ahnaf jurists reject several Ahad hadith, such as the hadith on the obligation of wudu’ due to touching the genitals and the hadith on deciding cases with one witness and an oath, as both are considered to contradict the apparent meaning of the Quran.
