Abstract

The Kampung Kapitan area, once the original settlement of the Chinese community in Palembang, now has only a few authentic, centuries-old buildings remaining in dire condition. Many of the structures have been damaged by time. The green open space in the area has also not been optimally managed. The deterioration of the area's physical condition, without subsequent repair efforts, has the potential to threaten the preservation of this historically valuable area. Therefore, a rejuvenation strategy is needed through revitalization of the area. The Kampung Kapitan revitalization effort adopts the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach initiated by UNESCO, a method for developing historic urban landscapes that combines cultural heritage preservation with social, cultural, and economic development objectives. Before formulating all design concepts, past mapping of the tangible and intangible aspects of the Kampung Kapitan area was conducted. This is important to identify what historical value remains so that it can serve as a design reference that can be reapplied to current landscape design. One recommended revitalization strategy is the restoration of historic buildings by reactivating their functions to meet current needs, as well as restructuring the area's landscape through restructuring zoning, circulation, hydrology, vegetation, and hardscape and softscape materials. All efforts to revive the image of the Kampung Kapitan area are expected to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving historic sites and enhance the appeal of historical tourism along the banks of the Musi River in Palembang.
