Abstract

This study analyzes the phenomenon of the creation of a new ontological order as a consequence of technology based on the thinking of Jacques Ellul. Ellul asserts that technology does not only encompass tools, but is a principle of efficiency pursued by humans and determines the direction of their actions. Technology has become the main force behind technology and the creation of modernity. Technology has entered various aspects of human life and created a technological system. Using a literature review method, this study examines how the technological system creates a new ontological order that ultimately influences the way humans exist. This study finds that the ontological order created by technology binds and constrains humans. Humans are unconsciously directed and forced to follow the demands of the technical system in order to live their lives and function in society. Humans think they are free subjects, but in reality, they are controlled by technical logic. This study shows that the main problem experienced by humans is not merely the visible development of technology, but also the new ontological order created by technology that influences the basic structure of human existence in the world. This study is expected to contribute to the philosophical understanding of technology and serve as a wake-up call regarding the importance of critical awareness in living a modern life today.
