Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems, located along tropical and subtropical coastal areas, play a vital role in carbon storage and the nitrogen cycle, both of which significantly influence greenhouse gas emissions. These ecosystems store atmospheric CO₂ in their biomass and sediments. However, widespread mangrove degradation disrupts their ecological functions and environmental stability. This study aims to examine the relationship between carbon and nitrogen cycling in mangrove ecosystems and explore sustainable management strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, integrating ecological perspectives and Islamic ethics. The research employs a comprehensive review of existing studies to analyze the roles of mangroves in carbon sequestration, nitrogen cycling, and their degradation's impacts on greenhouse gas emissions. It also discusses the integration of Islamic principles into mangrove conservation. Findings indicate that mangroves significantly contribute to carbon storage and nitrogen cycle regulation. Mangrove degradation affects their carbon sequestration capabilities, alters environmental conditions, and disrupts microorganisms essential for the nitrogen cycle. Furthermore, incorporating Islamic ethics into mangrove management can strengthen conservation efforts by fostering a sense of responsibility and sustainability. This study highlights the ecological importance of mangrove ecosystems in mitigating climate change through carbon and nitrogen management. It underscores the need for integrating Islamic ethical principles in conservation strategies to enhance sustainable environmental management. Preserving mangroves is critical for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting climate resilience.

Abstract

The cultivation of Kelulut (Trigona) honey bees has been initiated by the Peduli Pesisir Farmers Group (Mitra) in a mangrove-based agro-tourism area in Beras Basah Village, Pangkalan Susu District, North Sumatra. However, due to limitations in mastering the science and technology (IPTEKS) of kelulut cultivation and the number of stock owned by partners as well as several other aspects, partners have not been able to meet consumer demand, based on Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and community service team discussions with several group members. from informal farming and document searches, it can be seen that the partner has the right to manage an area of 4 hectares and it has great potential to increase the honey production of kelulut bees, because in this area there are various plants that produce flowers as a source of nectar/main food for kelulut bees. Based on some of the information above, a problem analysis was carried out by the community service team involving partners, so that an agreement was born to carry out several activities that could support the smooth transfer of science and technology, such as; counseling, discussions, training and the addition of a number of stup (kelulut bees + media).

Abstract

Abstract Pemberdayaan masyarakat dan kemandirian ekonomi merupakan elemen penting dalam pembangunan berkelanjutan. Pengabdian ini bertujuan menganalisis keberhasilan pemberdayaan dan penguatan kemandirian masyarakat Desa Bagan Kuala, Serdang Bedagai, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia melalui inisiatif yang berfokus pada ekowisata dan pengembangan produk pewarna alami ecoprint. Program ini melibatkan 50 peserta lokal yang terbagi ke dalam dua kelompok mitra: Kelompok Pengrajin Ecoprint dan Kelompok Pengelola Ekowisata Mangrove. Kedua kelompok ini mendapatkan pelatihan intensif tentang pembuatan produk ecoprint ramah lingkungan menggunakan pewarna alami dari flora lokal, serta manajemen ekowisata berbasis konservasi lingkungan. Hasil pengabdian menunjukkan peningkatan keterampilan kelompok mitra sebesar 70%, dengan diversifikasi produk ecoprint meningkat dari tiga jenis menjadi tujuh jenis, yang berkontribusi pada peningkatan pendapatan pengrajin hingga 20%. Selain itu, Kelompok Pengelola Ekowisata berhasil menarik lebih dari 200 pengunjung dalam enam bulan pertama, memberikan tambahan pendapatan sebesar 15% bagi desa. Inisiatif pemberdayaan ini juga meningkatkan kemandirian ekonomi kelompok mitra dengan membekali mereka untuk mengelola usaha secara mandiri, termasuk pemasaran produk ecoprint dan paket wisata mangrove. Program ini memperkuat kapasitas organisasi kelompok mitra dalam manajemen bisnis berkelanjutan serta meningkatkan kesadaran lingkungan melalui kegiatan konservasi seperti penanaman mangrove. Dengan partisipasi aktif masyarakat, inisiatif ini berhasil meningkatkan hasil ekonomi sekaligus mempromosikan upaya konservasi lingkungan jangka panjang di Desa Bagan Kuala. Program ini sejalan dengan beberapa Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (TPB) PBB, terutama TPB 1 (Tanpa Kemiskinan), TPB 8 (Pekerjaan Layak dan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi), dan TPB 11 (Kota dan Pemukiman yang Berkelanjutan). Kata kunci: pemberdayaan; kemandirian; ecoprint; ekowisata; konservasi mangrove Abstract Community empowerment and economic independence are essential for sustainable development. This study analyzes the success of empowering and fostering independence within the community of Bagan Kuala Village, Serdang Bedagai, through initiatives focused on ecotourism and the development of natural dye ecoprint products. The program involved 50 local participants organized into two partner groups: the Ecoprint Artisan Group and the Mangrove Ecotourism Management Group. Both groups underwent intensive training on producing eco-friendly ecoprint products using natural dyes from local flora, as well as managing ecotourism that emphasizes environmental conservation. Results of community service indicated a 70% improvement in the skills of the partner groups, with product diversification increasing from three to seven types of ecoprint, leading to a 20% increase in artisan income. Additionally, the Ecotourism Management Group attracted over 200 visitors within the first six months, contributing a 15% boost to village revenue. The empowerment initiatives enhanced the economic independence of the partner groups, allowing them to manage their businesses autonomously, including marketing ecoprint products and mangrove tour packages. The program also strengthened the groups’ organizational capacity in sustainable business management while fostering environmental awareness through conservation activities like mangrove planting. Through active community participation, this initiative successfully improved economic outcomes and promoted long-term environmental conservation efforts in Bagan Kuala. This program aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). Keywords: empowerment; independence; ecoprint; ecotourism; mangrove conesrvation

Indonesia has the largest mangrove land cover in the world, so it is essential to manage them, as they can provide ecological benefits to the environment and support the welfare of coastal communities through economic and social benefits. This review aimed to explore practical and Islamic perspectives on the sustainable management of mangrove forests. Sustainable management of mangrove forests, incorporating both practical strategies and Islamic principles, can enhance their role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The sustainable management of mangrove forests in Indonesia requires a holistic approach that integrates practical measures with ethical and religious principles. By combining scientific knowledge, community engagement, and Islamic values, it is possible to create a framework for the sustainable use and preservation of these vital ecosystems. Practically, it highlights the importance of conservation, reforestation, integrated coastal zone management, and community involvement. Islam, as a religion, provides guiding principles and systems that enable problem-solving, including the management of natural resources like mangrove forests. According to Islamic law, forests are part of public property. The state or authority must responsibly manage this public property. The wealth and benefits must be shared for the welfare of the people. On the other hand, it is unlawful to damage and exploit forest resources without careful consideration of the impacts on nature and humans. These strategies not only enhance mangrove protection for carbon storage but also bolster community resilience against climate impacts. This approach not only protects the environment but also enhances the well-being of the communities that depend on mangrove forests for their livelihoods.
