Abstract

This study explores the evolution and history of the rite of proclaiming the Gospel as found in the Ordo Missae of the Missale Romanum of Pius V (1570) and the Missale Romanum of Paul VI (2008). The objective is to facilitate a deeper understanding of how this rite has been celebrated in different contexts over time. The liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council has brought changes to the rite, simplifying some elements and removing unnecessary repetitions from the old Ordo Missae. Therefore, a comparative study of these two Ordines is necessary to fully comprehend the changes that have occurred in this rite. This study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach, focusing on comparative and historical analysis. It concludes that understanding the current rite of proclaiming the Gospel in the Ordo Missae is best achieved through comparison with the previous rite. The new Ordo Missae was not created abruptly or in a completely new way, but was compiled based on extensive liturgical study while retaining the essentials. Although the rite is expressed in two different forms of Ordines Missae, this does not mean that the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the Eucharist using “two rites,” but only with one rite, namely the Roman rite. Abstract

Antiphona ad Introitum or Entrance Antiphon is a liturgical text in the Missale Romanum. Following the liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council, the Entrance Antiphon’s function, form, and content underwent significant changes based on renewal criteria. Its role has shifted, and it is no longer intended for chant but exclusively for recitation. The form now consists of a single antiphon, unaccompanied by psalm verses and the doxology of the Gloria Patri. While some texts from the old Missale have been retained in their original form, most have been modified to suit their function better. This study seeks to elucidate the method of this reform, trace the editorial history of these texts, and provide a historical analysis of their origin and evolution from the early centuries to the present day. The aim is to help readers understand the background and evolution of these texts, the criteria utilized by the Consilium in the renewal, their theological significance, and their contemporary use. The conclusion of this study will underscore the dynamic nature of liturgy, constantly adapting to the needs of the times and its recipients. Ongoing updates and refinements will further enhance the congregation's comprehension of the mystery of the liturgical season. This study employs a historical-liturgical perspective through a comprehensive literature review.

Abstract

The rituals and the symbols embedded therein serve as markers of national identity and sources of inspiration for harmony within Indonesia’s multi-religious society. The researcher posits that the San Juan ritual and its accompanying symbols function as mediums for fostering social cohesion and hold significant implications for the promotion of religious moderation in Indonesia. This study seeks to explore the spiritual significance of the San Juan ritual as a contribution to the formation of a cohesive society grounded in the principles of religious moderation. The study adopts an anthropological and sociological approach. Data were obtained through field observations and structured interviews with 25 informants, including cultural leaders, religious leaders, government officials, educators, and youth. The data were analyzed in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and data verification, utilizng two analytical techniques—descriptive analysis and content analysis. The analysis of the rituals, their symbols, and the behavior of ritual participants is key to understanding the social structures and processes, as well as the broader social phenomena at play. This study finds that, in light of Victor Turner’s theoretical framework, the San Juan ritual—especially the candle (lilen) as its central symbol—serves both to reinforce the identity of the San Juan community and to act as a conduit for fostering social cohesion that supports religious moderation in Indonesia. This implicational meaning also contributes to the scholarly discourse in the sociology and anthropology of religion.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the origins of the personal prayers of the priest (apologiae sacerdotis) in the book of the Order of Mass (Ordo Missae) and how they have evolved to the present day. This study highlights two key aspects: first, the apologiae sacerdotis, and second, the Ordo Missae. The apologiae sacerdotis refers to certain prayers in the Mass that are recited only by the celebrant (priest or bishop), either silently or in a low voice. The Ordo Missae is a small section of the liturgical texts of the Roman Catholic Church found in the Missale Romanum. It contains the structure of the celebration, prayers, and rubrics used to celebrate Mass. This article analyzes the texts of the apologiae sacerdotis in several Ordines Missae that have developed from the 9th century to the present day. The research method employed is a literature study focusing on historical and comparative analysis. This study demonstrates that the apologiae sacerdotis influenced the formation of the structure of the Ordo Missae and that the current Ordo Missae is not purely Roman but rather a mixture of Roman rites and French-German adaptations. The inclusion of the apologiae sacerdotis in the Ordo Missae shows that the formulation and composition of liturgical books cannot be separated from cultural influences and the needs of the times.

Abstract

Integrating Catholicism and Kanjan Serayong culture within the Pesaguan Dayak community exemplifies the dynamic interplay between religious and cultural rituals, particularly in funeral ceremonies, fostering communal solidarity and cultural resilience through a seamless blend of traditional and Catholic practices. This research aims to elucidate how these cultural and religious elements coexist and reinforce each other within the community. Employing qualitative methods, the study includes interviews with three Pesaguan Dayak Indigenous Leaders and informants, participant observations, and literature analysis guided by Victor Turner's theory of ritual structure. The findings highlight that both Catholicism and Kanjan Serayong culture places a strong emphasis on rituals, particularly funeral ceremonies, which are central to honoring the deceased and fostering communal solidarity. The study reveals a profound respect for sacred traditions and cultural heritage, showing that rituals reflect a seamless blend of Catholic and indigenous practices, indicative of cultural adaptation and resilience. This research underscores the need for further studies on cultural inculturation within Indigenous communities, comparative analyses across different cultural contexts, and interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the understanding of Indigenous spirituality and cultural heritage preservation. Additionally, this study recommends involving local communities in the research process to promote mutual learning and effective cultural preservation strategies.

Abstract

This article aims to respond to an article titled " Christology of Tuak-Tempayan," published in the Journal Studia Philosophica et Theologica Vol. 24, No. 2, 2024. Drawing from pastoral experience in the Nanga Mahap Parish, Sanggau Diocese, the author of the article aims to help Catholics understand the mystery of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, who is truly God and truly man. He uses the phenomenon of distilling palm wine in clay pots as a means to understand and explain the mystery of faith to the faithful. In providing a response, this article uses the qualitative method of literature study. The results of this response indicate that the cultural elements chosen to understand and explain the Christological dogma are less suitable and appropriate for use. This article also shows that the concept of "Tuak-Tempayan Christology" to some extent does not heed the Church's teachings, especially regarding theology and the interpretation of dogma closely related to the communion of the Church. In order for "Tuak-Tempayan Christology" to truly become a contextual christology, this article suggests that reflections on the phenomenonof tuak-tempayan be linked to the life experiences of the Dayak people and the cries of the earth where they live.
