Abstract

This paper presents numerical and experimental study of heat transfer on fins-tube heat exchanger that functioned as an evaporator for coolingof humid air. In this case, change of phase occurred both on air and refrigerant. The proposed numerical analysis is based on the application of mass and energy balances implemented at small control volumes that were part of evaporator. The result of numerical evaluation was then compared to the experimental observation. A good agreement between experimental and numerical results was achieved and the proposed numerical method also could be used as a tool in designing fins tube heat exchanger with phase change in both fluids.

Abstract

The performance of cyclone separator is measured by its capability to separate solid particles from dust laden gas flow and its pressure drop. The last parameter shows the energy used for running it. The cyclone having highest separation efficiency and lowest pressure drop is needed in the industrial application. It is the aim of this research work to study a modified cyclone in order to find a better performance than the classical cyclone type. The modification is employed by inclining the roof of cyclone. With this modification, the pressure drop could be reduced of about 50% without significantly reducing of separation efficiency. This paper presents an investigation of performance of the modified cyclone. This experiment proposes some empirical correlation of separation efliciency and pressure drop at various values of dust load.

Abstract

This paper presents mathematical model and numerical simulation using CFD software FLUENT 5.4 applied on continuous casting process of steel slab. The distribution of temperature of the steel slab since it exits the mould till straightening region was evaluated. The result of numerical evaluation was also compared to the measurement temperature taken at some selected points. The comparison showed that there was a good agreement between the numerical result and the measurement data. The percentage of both liquid and solid phases along the slab was also simulated. It seems that the simulation of solid phase growth could be used as a method for determining the cross section position where the solidification ceases.

Abstract

New thermodynamic property model for n-Butane expressed in form of the Helmholtz free energy equation is presented. The formulation consists of eight terms of the so-called ideal-gas part and eighteen terms of the residual part. This is a relatively short equation in comparison to the existing equations, which are widely accepted, including the newly published in year 2006. In its development, available accurate experimental data of fluid properties and theoretical approach from the intermolecular potential were simultaneously considered to insure accuracy and to improve reliability of the equation of state over wide range of pressures and temperatures, especially at low temperatures in which the refrigeration field is concerned. From the coverage of experimental data used in model’s development, the validity range is then from triple-point (134.895 K) to temperature of 589 K and pressure up to 69 MPa. The uncertainties with respect to different properties are estimated to be 0.02% in ideal-gas isobaric specific heat, 0.2% in density, 1% in heat capacities, 0.2% in vapor-pressure except at very low temperatures, 0.05% in saturated-liquid density, 0.02% and 0.8% in speed of sound in the vapour and liquid phases, respectively.

Abstract

Cooling of clinker into grate cooler is one of important processes in cement manufacturing because it influences the quality of the clinker and also determines heat recovery of the combustion air which related well to the fuel consumption. Heat transfer mechanism of the clinker cooling comprises radiation, convection, and conduction. This paper presents a numerical method of clinker cooling process on a grate cooler in order to evaluate temperature distribution of both clinker and cooling air in vertical and horizontal directions along the grates. The result was validated with the measurement of clinker temperature at the discharge section of the cooler. The proposed evaluation method will pave the way for determining the constant values of the control system for cooling air..

Abstract

Clinker production of a cement plant can be increased by rising clinker to kiln feed ratio-CKFR. One of the methods for increasing CKFR is by improving the separating efficiency of the top cyclone. The increase of separating efficiency of the top cyclone causes not only the increase of production, but is also followed by the lowering of specific heat consumption and percentage of ash in the coal because the exit gas from thetop cyclone is normally used for coal drying. This paper presents a simple and cheap modification of the top cyclone that has been applied in a Indonesian cement plant. The results show that the proposed modification can simultaneously increase clinker production, lower both of specific heat consumption and percentage of ash in the fine coal that used as the main fuel of the plant.

Abstract

Environmental issues enforce us to find environmental friendly alternative refrigerants. Increasing energy consumption as consequence of widespread usage of air-conditioning systems needs effort to find efficient systems. Use ability of alternative refrigerants and effect of modified vapor-compression cycles were investigated in this research. In figuring effects of their application on a real air-conditioning system, analysis of redesign of air-conditioning system was concerned to make clear the problem. The results confirm that a right selection of refrigerants to air-conditioning system can improve its performance. Energy saving and economical costs can be reduced significantly. Several groups of hydrocarbons (HC) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC) have good thermodynamic performance and better than R-22 that will be phased out. By introducing these alternative refrigerants, carbon-dioxide (CO2) emissions can be reduced due to energy saving caused by increasing of the coefficient of performance (COP).

Abstract

Cement calsiner is a reactor where the decarbonization of lime stone and fuel combustion processes take place simultaneously. Decarbonization of lime stone is endothermic process and uses the heat produced by the combustion of fuel. However, because these two simultaneous processes produce CO2, the effectiveness of both processes depend on the CO2 concentration along the gas stream inside the calciner. The complexity of these simultaneous processes causes the variation of calciner design that could be found in cement industry. Especially for the calciner using coal as a fuel, this variation design influences significantly to the operation of the calciner. This paper presents a comparison study of design and operational parameters of some calciners in Indonesian cement manufacturers. The result of study could be used for designers to consider some principal parameters during design process so that the calciner could operate properly and give a better performance.

Abstract

One of the methods for increasing separation efficiency of a cyclone is to implement a fabric filter at its inner tube. The combination of cyclone separator and fabric filter in commonly called as cyclo-dust filter. This paper presents an experimental study of the performance test of cyclo-dust filter and CFD numerical simulation of the flow inside this apparatus. The experiment was conducted for some variation of filter area. The results show that the separation efficiency of more than 99% was observed. This value is normally very difficult to reach with a normal cyclone separator. The pressure drop rises with the increasing of fabric’s area. However this increase of pressure drop is not proportional to the increase of the fabric’s area. The CFD simulation was also used for determining the best position of inlet duct.
