Abstract

Abstract

As the size and complexity of mining equipment grow, the impact of equipment failure becomes increasingly critical, often leading to costly downtime and production delays. Mining equipment performance depends on several factors, including equipment reliability, the operating environment, maintenance efficiency, operating processes, and the technical expertise of the personnel. Improving equipment reliability is essential to address these challenges, and one effective approach is to reduce the mean time to repair (MTTR), which significantly affects equipment availability.  This study presents a case study on reducing the MTTR of the starter motor for coal mining equipment using the Lean Six Sigma method. Lean Six Sigma combines the principles of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma to identify inefficiencies and reduce variability. The findings reveal a substantial reduction in MTTR from 110 minutes to 10 minutes. Statistical analysis using a two-sample t-test confirms the significance of the improvement, with the process capability index (cpk) increasing from -2.94 to 6.96. This case study demonstrates the potential of Lean Six Sigma to address critical maintenance challenges, improve operational efficiency, and enhance equipment reliability in the mining sector.

Abstract

Tire pressure plays an important role in ensuring safe operation and performance of truck vehicles. Improper tire pressure always leads to tire life, vehicle safety, and performance. This paper discusses the application of measurement system analysis on truck tire pressure in a coal mining company. The study evaluates the measurement system of truck tire pressure. The company aims to extend the life span of its tire by maintaining and monitoring the tire pressure regularly. The tire pressure is measure by a pressure gauge. This study used measurement system analysis (MSA) to analyze the Gage R&R, with 2 tire men and 10 parts measured with 3 repetitions. The MSA results in a Total Gage R&R of 18.16% with a repeatability value of 12.34% and a reproducibility value of 13.32%. The result indicated that the measurement system showed good results for tire measurement applications because the Gage R&R was between 10% to 30%.

Abstract

Abstract

This study presents a systematic review of Lean and Six Sigma (LSS) implementation in the maritime sector for the period 2016–2025, encompassing the contexts of ports, shipyards, logistics, the LNG industry, fisheries, and ship design. The analysis reveals a shift in focus from initial case studies to strategic implementation integrated with digital transformation, supply chain resilience, and sustainability. DMAIC and Value Stream Mapping methodologies dominate as the primary framework, supported by the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies and data analytics to maximize process efficiency. Quantitative evidence demonstrates the reduction in process time, reduction in defect rates, and significant operational cost savings. However, the success of LSS implementation is highly influenced by management support, human resource readiness, and the availability of reliable data, with the main obstacles being cultural resistance, limited initial investment, and lack of technical training. This study confirms that the future of LSS in the maritime sector is moving towards a hybrid model that combines Lean, Six Sigma, digitalization, and sustainability principles, which has the potential to become a global best practice in increasing the competitiveness of the maritime industry in an era of competition and uncertainty in the global supply chain.
