Abstract

Indonesia boasts 74 diverse ecosystems, with the riparian system, found in areas like the Welang watershed in Malang Regency, Pasuruan Regency, and Pasuruan City, standing out. These moisture-adapted vegetative zones act as key transitions between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Human activities in the central Welang watershed could impact its rich vegetation. This study aimed to catalog plant species in the riparian zones and assess their influence on water quality. Utilizing an explorative quantitative descriptive method, research was conducted at four sites in the central Welang watershed in June 2023, encompassing vegetation inventory and water sampling. Findings revealed 67 individual plants from 29 families, predominantly trees, in the central Welang region. This count exceeds the downstream but is less than the upstream. Water quality met the standards, indicating no pollution. Nonetheless, the potential presence of heavy metals necessitates further studies. Understanding Welang's riparian dynamics provides insights into riverbank ecosystems in Indonesia and possibly Southeast Asia. As these zones bridge aquatic and terrestrial environments, they're pivotal for biodiversity, water management, and settlement planning. This research underlines the need to harmonize human progress with ecological conservation, especially as the global focus intensifies on sustainable practices. The study's outcomes can enhance global discussions on riparian ecosystem preservation.

Abstract

The history of the environmental conservation movement in Indonesia is not detached from the global elitist influence. The policy products of the elites’ thought and European colonialism backward originated from a few influential persons in the Western countries that came across to the Dutch East Indies through international persuades. Natural conservation that had originally been a part of indigenous daily life has been slowly transformed as a modern scientific area of works that need a specific expertise. So therefore, this research was aimed to explore and question the impact of the international conservation movement toward Indonesia for about the 19th to 20th century. The research used literature study and interview methods. Then, the analysis was focused on the aspects of Indonesia conservation policy, funding, and people’s participation.

Abstract

Sungai Welang merupakan salah satu sungai di Provinsi Jawa Timur yang melalui 3 kabupaten atau kota yaitu Kabupaten Malang, Kabupaten Pasuruan dan Kota Pasuruan. Sungai Welang memiliki Daerah Aliran Sungai (DAS) seluas 511,60 dengan panjang sungai 40,09 yang bersumber didaerah hulu dan bermuara di Selat Madura atau Laut Jawa. Vegetasi riparian merupakan tumbuhan yang dijumpai tumbuh dan berada di tepian sungai serta berfungsi sebagai ekosistem peralihan antara habitat akuatik dan terestrial. Daerah Riparian bermanfaat untuk menjaga kualitas air sungai, keberadaan organisme yang hidup di sungai, serta menjadi habitat dari berbagai jenis fauna. Oleh karena itu ekosistem riparian tersebut sangat berpotensi dalam fitoremediasi lingkungan. Fitoremediasi adalah konsep teknologi alami yang memanfaatkan peran tumbuhan untuk menyelesaikan masalah lingkungan seperti pencemaran perairan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui keanekaragaman jenis tumbuhan yang berada di daerah riparian pada hulu Sungai Welang. Penelitian ini dilakukan selama awal tahun 2022 dengan melakukan inventarisasi pada 6 lokasi pengamatan yaitu di Desa Mbarek, Desa Sempol, Desa Wonorejo, Desa Semut, Sumber air Jempinang, dan Daerah TWA Baung (belakang Kebun Raya Purwodadi). Hasil yangdidapat kemudian dianalisis secara dekriptif dan disajikan dalam bentuk tabel. Jenis tumbuhan yang diperoleh pada daerah Sumber Jempinang ada 20 jenis dan pada 5 lokasi lainnya sebanyak 163 jenis. Sehingga total tercatat terdapat 171 jenis dari152 marga vegetasi riparian yang terdapat pada 6 lokasi pengamatan tersebut di sepanjang sungai Welang daerah hulu. Untuk lebih mengenal keanekaragaman vegetasi riparian yang ada disarankan dapat mengamati karakteristik jenis dan fenologinya di Kebun Raya Purwodadi.
