Abstract

This article explores the concept of eternal punishment in light of the Christocentric universalism Karl Barth outlines in his seminal work Church Dogmatics. While Barth explicitly rejects the doctrine of apokatastasis, his treatment of election and reconciliation suggests that salvation is already accomplished for humanity, rendering eternal damnation unnecessary. Using a literature review methodology, this study examines key themes in Church Dogmatics II and IV, including Christ’s election and the interplay between grace and sin. The findings highlight Barth’s assertion that eternal punishment is not possible. However ineffective sin might prove to be, Barth by no means diminishes its seriousness. Instead, he emphasizes the work of Christ as central to the doctrine of salvation.

Abstract

This article explores Karl Barth’s understanding of the exclusive-ty of revelation in the Church Dogmatics, addressing whether understood Jesus Christ should be seen as a negation of the understanding ofr as its re-volution. Barth rejects religion as a means of knowing God, since revelation is given only in Christ. On this basis, any appeal to general revelation as an independent way of knowing God proves invalid. At the same time, Barth affirms that creation stands under the grace of God, which can be un-derstood only as hidden grace in Christ. This dialectic indicates that Jesus Christ does not simply negate religion but transforms it. Religion is no longer regarded as a source of revelation but as a sphere drawn into the horizon of Christ’s grace. The article, therefore, affirms Barth’s Christo-centric exclusivity while also offering a reinterpretation of his position on religion and general revelation.
