Abstract

Abstract This study aims to examine the causes of local community resistance in Singosari Village, Gresik, to the construction of Extra High Voltage Transmission Lines (SUTET) by the State Electricity Company (PLN) during the 1992-2006 period, as well as the strategies employed by the residents in defending their rights. The historical method is applied in this research, which includes heuristics, source verification, interpretation, and historiography. The sources used include academic articles, theses, newspapers, and oral interviews with historical figures. The findings show that the conflict was triggered by differing perceptions between PLN and the residents regarding health impacts, land rights, and the economic value of the land traversed by the SUTET. The residents employed various resistance strategies, such as filing complaints, forming alliances, and submitting legal lawsuits. Despite these efforts, the community's resistance did not succeed in changing PLN's stance, which adhered to the principles of legality and claims of national interest.

Abstract

The gallantry of the people of Surabaya in resisting Allied forces in 10th November 1945 led the government to designate that date as Heroes’ Day. Various ceremonies are held and monuments are built to preserving the memory of the battle. However, the construction of this historical memory is not without its own interests. This research examines how historical memory of the Battle of Surabaya was constructed throughout the administration of Sukarno and Suharto, why the memory was erected and what aspect was deliberately forgotten. Employing historical methodology, this research shows Sukarno leveraged these historical narrtives to foster nationalism and enhance Indonenisa’s international standing. Under the regime of Suharto, the construction of historical memory was similarly used to promote his political agendas, spread anti-communism and legitimate military role. Both regimes sought to conceal the killings of civilians and the disparities between central administration and local Surabaya residents due to beliefs that it would undermine nationalism and heroic narrative.

Abstract

This article aims to explain Sketsmasa magazine's framing of the Old and New Order rulers. The method used in this research is the historical method. The results show that Sketsmasa positively framed the Old and New Order governments because the government banned media that threatened their status quo. Sketsmasa's positive framing of the Old Order ruler, Sukarno, was by conveying Sukarno's outstanding leadership and correcting slanders against Sukarno that could defame him. During the New Order, Sketsmasa framed differently. Sketsmasa's framing was not only in the form of positive things about the then ruler, Soeharto, but also negative things about the previous ruler, Soekarno. Sketsmasa attacked Sukarno's personality and showed the crimes of the Old Order that had never been shown by Sketsmasa before. The aim was to create the impression in society that Soeharto was the savior of the abuses committed by Sukarno during the Old Order.
