Abstract

This study is based on the concept of World Englishes (WE). It aims to examine the attitudes and awareness of university students towards different varieties of English. Data was collected from 38 students through a questionnaire, with 10 participants selected for interviews. The mixed method design of concurrent embedded was used to analyze the data, combining qualitative interview data with quantitative questionnaire data for a comprehensive result. The qualitative data from the interview were integrated with the quantitative data from the questionnaire to reinforce the findings. All data collected from the participants were carefully examined and analyzed. The study revealed that students possess a general awareness and positive attitudes towards various forms of English. However, their limited exposure to these varieties hinders their knowledge and understanding of them. This preference reflects the influence of socio-cultural factors on language learning and suggests the need for a more comprehensive approach to English language education that includes exposure to world Englishes.

Abstract

This study focuses on enhancing the vocabulary mastery skills of kindergarten teachers by employing the Show and Tell (S&T) method. The research adopts a quantitative approach, specifically utilizing experimental research design. A total of 12 kindergarten teachers from TK Khalifah 3 Banda Aceh participated in this study. Data collection was conducted through pre-tests and post-tests, using multiple-choice questions designed to assess vocabulary mastery. The instruments measured specific indicators, including mastery of standard language, completion of gap sentences, identification of synonyms, and recognition of antonyms. The collected data were analyzed using the T-test formula to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The findings reveal that the implementation of the Show and Tell (S&T) strategy significantly improved the vocabulary mastery of the teachers involved. This improvement is attributed to the interactive and engaging nature of the S&T method, which encourages teachers to participate actively and develop their language skills in a more meaningful and practical manner. The study concludes that the Show and Tell (S&T) strategy is an effective tool for enhancing vocabulary skills among kindergarten teachers, equipping them with the linguistic proficiency necessary for their teaching roles. This research highlights the importance of innovative teaching methods in professional development and underscores the potential of active learning strategies in improving language skills among educators. Further studies are recommended to explore the long-term impact of the S&T method and its applicability across different educational contexts.

Abstract

Naming patterns in Indonesia have shown the influence of geographical, social, and cultural factors on toponymy. Place naming in Aceh, a province in the country, has been based on the genesis and generic patterns that indicate specific objects, historical reasons, and word-forming elements. This study explores the dominant naming patterns found in the West Aceh and Nagan Raya regions by analyzing data sourced from regional databases, government archives, and the SIGAP (Sistem Informasi Gampong-Village Information System). A total of 131 place names from 29 villages were examined through literature review and document analysis as primary and secondary data sources. Thematic analysis, following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) framework, was employed to systematically identify recurring linguistic patterns. The results revealed nine dominant naming patterns in these regions, demonstrating a combination of different elements such as alue [aluə] ‘ditch’, blang [blaŋ] ‘rice field’, pasi [pasi] ‘beach’, suak [suaʔ] ‘estuary’, cöt [cət] ‘highland’, often combined with nouns or adjectives. This study illustrates how place names convey linguistic structures and geographical narratives that present Aceh's interconnection between language, landscape, and cultural identity. The findings contribute to broader discussions on the role of toponyms in preserving local knowledge and shaping regional identity.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to redefine education by providing novel strategies to improve language learners’ speaking skills and boost their confidence. This study examines the efficacy of AI-powered adaptive interactive methods in fostering improved speaking fluency, accurate pronunciation, and learner self-assurance. Our research is grounded in a mixed-method approach, utilizing quantitative performance measures and qualitative learner feedback. The results underscore AI’s potential in personalizing learning experiences, reducing anxiety, and building sustained competence in spoken communication. This paper also discusses implementation challenges, ethical considerations, and pathways for future research on AI-assisted language learning.
