Abstract

This research aims to look at the economic structure transformation in each district in Riau Province. The method used is analyzing competitive advantage and specialization of Esteban Marquillass and Klassen typology. From the results of processing, it is known that agriculture, forestry, and fisheries are superior sectors, have competitiveness, and are specialized in 6 districts in Riau, namely Indragiri Hulu (Inhu), Kampar, Indragiri Hilir (Inhil), Pelalawan, Kuantan Singingi (Kuansing), and Rokan Hulu (Rohul). The manufacturing industry is a superior sector that has competitiveness and specialization in Dumai City, and the trade sector is a sector that has a competitive advantage and specialization in Pekanbaru City. Meanwhile, no single industry has a competitive advantage and specialization in 4 other districts (Siak, Bengkalis, Rokan Hilir, and Kepulauan Meranti). Processing results with the Klassen typology show that the agricultural industry in Kuansing, Inhu, and Kampar Regencies, which 2012 was developing, will shift to become a mainstay sector in 2022. In contrast, in Bengkalis, Pekanbaru, and Dumai Regencies, this sector is still one of the lagging economic sectors.

Abstract

Poverty issues have always been in the world spotlight. Monetary poverty measurements are considered only to be able to capture a small part of the various poverty issues, so measurements involving multidimensions are needed. This study attempts to measure poverty based on multiple levels of deprivation experienced by people in Riau Province. This study uses aspects of health, education, and standard of living. The results of the study show that all indicators simultaneously have a significant impact on monetary poverty. These indicators are calorie and protein consumption, length of schooling, school sustainability, and housing-related indicators. In addition, differences were also found in the picture of poverty measured only by considering monetary aspects and poverty measured using multidimensional aspects.

Abstract

Poverty is a multidimensional issue, necessitating a multidimensional approach to complement existing poverty alleviation efforts. Utilizing household microdata from the National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS) 2018–2022 and the Alkire-Foster method, this study aims to measure poverty based on various levels of deprivation experienced by the population. The study examines three dimensions: education, health, and living standards. The findings reveal disparities between poverty measured solely through monetary aspects and poverty measured by considering multiple dimensions. The proportion of the population living in multidimensional poverty is greater than those living in monetary poverty, indicating that even if individuals are not economically poor, they remain deprived across various poverty dimensions. In Riau Province from 2018 to 2022, the health dimension had the highest contribution to multidimensional poverty, followed by living standards and education.
