Abstract

The best teachers must be present in Timor-Leste schools in order to guarantee high standards of education. Therefore, this study was conducted to understand the factors that influence teachers to achieve better educators. In this work, the exploratory sequential design is used together with mixed techniques. In the first phase, a request was made that only teachers who had won prizes should respond to the semi-structure interview which provided specific qualitative accounts of their experiences and feelings. Narrative analysis method was employed to analyse the data. May it be in terms of content or method, the study discovered through qualitative analysis that quantitative data was then obtained in the second phase to find out more of the specific components, which the instructors consider as influential for them to become better educators. Teachers at primary school in Baucau about 40 were requested to fill questionnaires that comprised most of the quantitative part of the study. The study results of the narrative analysis supported the notion that motivation, experience, surroundings, and culture influences teacher development. Additionally, the results of the correlation analysis supported the hypothesis that there is a higher convergence between performance, environment, motivation, and sociocultural factors and teachers' achievement as educators, as well as a higher correlation between teachers' achievement and factors related to professional experience.

Abstract

The integration of social media through YouTube now draws extensive worldwide interest for use in educational practice. YouTube serves as a beneficial educational resource in Timor-Leste by helping improve learning at the tertiary level because traditional teaching materials are not easily accessible. This review examines how YouTube enhances educational success for Timor-Leste's tertiary students. The research investigation reveals vital aspects which cover accessibility together with student engagement as well as independent learning methods yet the analysis also addresses digital competency limitations and network resource problems. The research indicates that YouTube serves as a powerful learning enhancement platform through its available multidimensional content that keeps students engaged. Optimal use of YouTube educational resources demands solution of connectivity problems and skill deficiencies in digital learning methods. The paper finishes by providing concrete advice for teachers and policy leaders who want to make full use of YouTube for education purposes at the tertiary course level.

Abstract

This qualitative case study examines how the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach can be adapted to general English classes in a higher education institution in Timor-Leste to answer the long-standing question of how students can acquire speaking proficiency in a multilingual learning environment. The paper brings into focus the incorporation of CLT into classroom activities with special emphasis on the application of role play, pair work, seminars, simulations, and task-based learning as means of promoting interactive and communicative competence. A descriptive qualitative case study design was used to develop in-depth knowledge of contextual teaching and learning experiences, the perspectives of the participants, and naturally occurring practices in the institutional setting. Semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis were the data-gathering methods. Purposive sampling was used to select the two lecturers and seven students directly involved in teaching general English. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data, which made it possible to identify repeated themes and patterns that revealed both opportunities and difficulties in implementing CLT in context. The results of the study indicate that, despite the adaptation of the CTL approach in teaching practices, its implementation is often sporadic due to concerns about English proficiency, teacher training, and flexibility in using local and official languages during instruction. The research demonstrates the necessity of adapting CLT methods to the local education environment and arranging long-term professional development for lecturers. This study helps us understand how context-sensitive CLT approaches can lead to improved results in teaching and learning English in Timor-Leste. The interactive approach and the systematic teacher model could significantly improve students' communicative competence.

Abstract

This article discusses the importance of student-centred learning (SCL) strategies for enhancing students’ ability to learn English and their speaking and writing competence at the elementary level in Timor-Leste. The research employed a qualitative design to investigate how teachers focus on SCL strategies to enhance students' language skills and how these strategies are implemented in classroom practice, based on semi-structured interviews with one English teacher and three students at EBC Seloi-Craic in Aileu. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data, which included the participants' perceptions and experiences. The results indicate that the teacher focused on SCL and included systematic tasks like quizzes, dictations, sentence constructions, and classroom presentations, which gave the students opportunities to express their thoughts. Collaborative learning, differentiated assessment, and motivation support could promote students' confidence, fluency, engagement, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Students attested that SCL provided a supportive classroom atmosphere in which they felt free to communicate and learn from fellow pupils. The research finds that SCL is a useful pedagogy that can be successfully used to enhance English language proficiency in multilingual settings like Timor-Leste, and it has implications for teaching practice, curriculum, and teacher development

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The demonstration method is essential for implementing mathematics learning for students in basic education in Timor-Leste. This research aims to examine teachers' ways of giving importance to and implementing demonstration methods in the discipline of mathematics. A qualitative method with a descriptive design was applied to explore the ideas and experiences of participants in the field. A mathematics teacher and five students were important participants in this research. These participants were selected using purposive sampling techniques, which involved them based on their experience, confidence, and ability to provide accurate data. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation methods. Interview data were analysed using thematic techniques, and observation and documentation data were applied with content analysis techniques. The data were validated with triangulation techniques. The research results revealed that teachers attached importance to the use of demonstration methods, which had a positive effect on students' mathematics learning performance. The results of observation and documentation also confirm that teachers have a desire to use the method because it offers substantial benefits for students' learning. Demonstration methods become a positive element in teachers' teaching and students' learning of mathematics to improve the results of students' holistic education in Timor-Leste.   ABSTRAK: Metode demonstrasi sangat penting untuk mengimplementasikan pembelajaran matematika bagi siswa pendidikan dasar di Timor-Leste.
