Abstract

The study examined the influence of internet addiction on academic performance of senior secondary school Islamic Studies students in Ilorin, Nigeria. The study adopted quantitative method of research design. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 150 senior secondary school students of Islamic Studies in Ilorin, Nigeria. An adapted questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents. Two research questions were raised and answered using Mean and Standard Deviation while PPMC was used to test formulated hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. Findings from the study revealed that there is high level of internet addiction among senior secondary school students of Islamic studies in Ilorin, Nigeria. Also, the study revealed that there is significant relationship between internet addiction and students` academic performance among senior secondary school students in Ilorin, Nigeria. In line with the findings of the study, it is recommended that schools should organize seminars for students to use internet to enhance academic excellence. It was concluded that teachers and parents must work together to assist the students on effective usage of internet usage.

Abstract

This study examined the integration of digital tools for teaching and learning of Islamic studies among senior secondary schools in Ilorin, Nigeria. The advent of digital technology has profoundly impacted the landscape of Islamic religious education. The Covid- 19 pandemic outbreak, accelerated the adoption of digital tools for teaching and learning management. For that reason, educational institutions transitioned to virtual learning environments, utilizing diverse digital platforms. A descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 503 respondents as sample size for this study. An adapted questionnaire was used to elicit information from the respondents for the study. The reliability of the instrument was carried out with reliability index of 0.77. These findings indicate that Islamic educational institutions values the incorporation of digital technology and websites for teaching and learning. This approach is seen as crucial for equipping students with a balance skill between the interest of the world and preparation for the hereafter. Also, the study identified several key skills necessary for effective knowledge acquisition such as, mobile app proficiency, internet literacy, smart phone familiarity, technical competence, communication, creativity, time management, flexibility skills, and pedagogical knowledge. The study concluded that the study’s findings highlight the importance of digital skills for both teachers and students, the positive impact of smart phone use on teaching and learning effectiveness, particularly on Islamic studies. Based on the findings, the study recommended that educational curricula should be updated to incorporate digital tools and resources, to ensure that students develop the necessary digital skills to thrive in the 21st century.

Abstract

Islam as a religion touches every aspect of man’s life such that the past, present and future occurrences have been scripted in the Qur’an. Hence, the advancement in technology globally which has generated the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, religion, economy, health, socio-cultural and a host of others can never be underestimated. AI has now become a veritable tool used in tackling any societal problems without stress. It is against this background that this paper examines the Islamic views on AI integration for addressing Nigeria’s societal issues. In an attempt to do justice to this paper, secondary data were sourced from textbooks, journal articles, seminar papers, and newspapers, among others on the subject matter. The finding of this study shows that Islam supports the integration of AI as one of the technical methods for tackling education, religion and economic issues in Nigeria. The paper concludes that more awareness should be made of the significance and effective integration of AI in addressing the challenges facing the nations.
